I was driving on I-70 West in Indianapolis in the middle lane going about 55 miles per hour when a rock or something hit my windshield and busted a fist sized cobweb crack into it. At first I thought I blew a tire since I heard two hits and I quickly got myself on the side of the road. I assessed the damage and found out that my window had been hit by something, I wasn't sure, but it made a pretty nasty looking cobweb crack and little glass shards all over the inside of my truck on the dash. So, I put out my cones, put my flashers on, put a Macro 24, which is for road breakdown and then called safety to report the incident. After that, I had to wait. I waited for a hour, so I played some games of my qualcomm and then I got a message from my dispatcher asking me if I delivered the trailer to the Amazon DC yet. I said no, I was waiting for road breakdown to answer me. Then he replied that he needs the trailer dropped off at Amazon and then I head back to the terminal. I said I will go back to the terminal, but it is a DOT violation if I drive with this type of crack for long. He replied that it is only a DOT violation if it disrupts the sight of the driver. Bullcrap. I am a driver, he is a dispatcher and probably never set foot in a truck. So, I proceeded back to the terminal, and stopped at a stop light and told him that the crack was getting bigger with every bump and that I needed to get it assessed. Well, needless to say, he got ticked and I just dropped it off at the terminal, turned in my truck keys and my truck and filled out my report and went home for the night. The next day to see if my truck was done so I could driver that night, I went to see my safety manager and told him the same story. He said that I did the right thing in going back to the terminal instead of going to Amazon. The night of the incident when I went home, I looked up the DOT regulations on that certain crack and it was a violation. If I got caught, it would cost me and the company and more than likely, I would have lost my job. I don't get why dispatchers do that. I am guessing negligence, ####iness or they just don't know, but what I do know that Werner needs to get better night dispatchers and ones that actually drove a truck before, instead of these golden boys they find on the streets.
