James, what happened to the other guy? Did he get fired, or was he a "pet" driver and got off easy? You had a witness to back you up (your wife), so I hope he got canned, too. But if he didn't, I wouldn't be surprised one #### bit. That sort of garbage was/is common at Swift. When I worked for Swift, there were entrenched drivers at the Richmond, Va terminal you didn't want to mess with. Those guys could hit you over the head with a pipe wrench and nothing would happen to them. However, if you just looked at those guys wrong, you were soon cleaning out your truck. Ditto if you complained about their getting preferential treatment (good runs) from dispatchers. You learned to watch those guys get the Nevada runs while you took your New York City runs without saying jack about it.
These guys used the "n" word a lot when they talked about a very cool recruiter that used to work there, but, again, nothing happened to them. Such is the "good ol' boy" network south of the Mason-Dixon. If the government would back off in states like Virginia, the elite-sponsored terrorist group known as the KKK would be lynching blacks again. And I bet some of those guys doing the lynching would be Swift drivers. -
hi just tought i would let you no that the other driver got fired to but he did not expect to he called them and told them what happend.

I too got fired from Koch, just today! But your not gonna believe why. I was told that someone called to say I made a lane change and cut them off. I did not get a ticket or cause an accident. I didn't even know I cut someone off but here's the worst part...... supposedly the person I just happen to cut off was the administrator of the Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration, Mr. John H. himself (my wife looked up his name for me). Mr. H. called Koch to complain and I was fired the same day. Now, do you think if any Joe off the street would have called to complain I would have been fired? NO! They even told me they get complaints about drivers all the time but of all the people I had to cut of the one person who is charge of it all. Talk about ironic! I'm not even sure what to do now. I'm still in shock. It's a shame that Mr. H. forgets that we are the working class just trying to make a living for our families. I got kids to feed. School is starting soon. It Mr. John H. going to buy clothes and shoes and all those things you do your your children. NO!!

If I can get an email address from someone, I'll drop John H. Hot-N-Tot a line. He won't like it, which is how I like it.
Drivers should stage a protest somewhere, such as out front of John H.'s office. They could stand inside of trash cans being as so many think drivers are disposible, just like John H. Those drivers could even dress up in dirty, furry blue outfits like Oscar the Grouch on Sesame Street. -
I'm no anti-racist, but one thing the state of Virginia is most certainly not, is the stereotypical "southern" state. And not only because this is 2007 when whites have been safely and appropriately defanged to accord with happy modern ideas of equality and getting-along-with-everybody: moreso by reason of its cultural and economic history, which has kept it above the level of those southern states which set the bar for the stereotype here misapplied to modern Virginia.
Having lived, triste dictu, over half my life in this state, I can assert without qualification that "racism" of the kind you mention is absolutely not a feature of public, nor even private life among its citizens. They are as hypochondriacally anti-racist and "I have black friends too!" as the good citizens of New Hampshire and San Francisco. Total mistake, indicative of complete of lack experience among the people here. Probably there are serious "KKK" types in the interior or in the middle Blue Ridge area; otherwise, and categorically, no. The Southeast is well over 60% black, and the whites, by now, can really be subsumed under the same category; Richmond is largely black, and the majority of whites are students and working class, utterly foreign to racism; the North is also largely black and the rest, federals, yuppies and the like. Southwest Blue Ridge is mostly collegiate and hippie; upper Blue Ridge is more or less the same, with a more sizeable "rural" white population. It must not be overlooked that long cohabitation with blacks, and the now dominant "ghetto" culture, infamous oxymoron that it is, has put lower-class whites on precisely the same cultural level: they are indistinguishable in all but skin color from their black neighbors. How these people are supposed to be "racist" must be rigorously proven. Having had these people as neighbors for way too long, I cannot see how it can be proven, and I believe this charge is just a piece of rhetoric that you've been swinging around for a while.
Sorry to jump on you; it isn't a personal thing -- I am just telling you: it is not as you say at all. White Virginians are bent-over-backward PCites. I don't know how that's a good thing, but it is the state of affairs. -
MLintini, I agree overall. I grew up in Virginia, understand. I don't think Virginians make a conscious effort and try to be PC. This is because they are anything but racists and don't need to worry about that sort of thing. But there are pockets of the old guard even in Virginia. Not long ago, I had an intro to Virginia's racism that hides in the woodwork. This was at the first trucking company I ever worked for, and it opened my eyes. Those guys didn't even try to hide their views. I wouldn't have been surprised if they would have saluted each other Nazi-style.
