Well, ya' know how it goes. When a guy screws up big time like this guy did, it's never his fault.

Trailers do have spring brakes trucks have spring brakes too !

If the vehicle moves with the brakes set or no air in the system that means that the brakes are not setting like they should.

This is most likely because the slack adjusters are not keeping the brakes in adjustment.

It could be because the slack adjusters are wore out or are gummed up with old grease or the brake shoes are just plane wore slap out !!

Any of the above are not good and the truck should be put put of service by the driver until fixed!!

If the company does not want to fix it I would quit on the spot !!! I will not let some desk jockey get anyone killed with me in control .

The one going to jail for killing someone is YOU not the dispatcher!! So don't let them try to make you do something you know is wrong.

wait, WHAT? Trailers have had spring brakes required by federal law for years. Infact, they've had ABS required by law for years. If there are any trailers on the road without spring brakes, they are NOT in use by a mega carrier. However, ABS is still a pretty recent thing and my company has some trailers that do not have it, i have to pay attention to the sticker and warning light when i pick one up!

And "if no air the brakes will set"...without spring brakes? How? Either i'm reading this wrong or you do not understand how air brakes for road vehicles work. And i dont know how you got a CDL if you dont know how they work.

    Heres how they work:
The blue line only has air when you apply the trailer brakes via the hand valve OR the brake pedal. It is an increase in air pressure that applies the brakes, not a decrease, and this can be proved by unhooking the blue line and stomping on the pedal. With spring brakes, there are springs that hold the brake linings against the drums until air is applied via a second air line, the emergency or red line. When they are released, and you stomp on the pedal, which puts air into the service or blue line, it counter affects the air pressure in the emergency side, allowing the brakes to apply again. Simple.

The reason for this confusion some people have is because trains are backwards, and most of us learned about air brakes on trains in history class, because it was a major major major historical development. Before air brakes, trains had hand brakes which had to be manually applied by a guy running across the roof of the train! Train air brakes simply reduce air pressure to apply the brakes. The system is also very slow and has weird valves that can apply all the brakes instantly in an emergency.

I truly do not believe a word of the OP, beyond the fact that the driver allowed the truck to roll down a hill while he wasnt in it.

The problem with the OP is the laws of physics, most notably inertia. It's easier to keep a parked truck from rolling than it is to stop a rolling truck. You can prove this with a simple at home experiment: Put your car on a very slight incline, almost a flat surface, in neutral, brakes released. Stand in front of it and keep it from rolling. Now, have someone else drive it up to 10 mph, throw it into neutral, and thenn stand in front of it and try to stop it. I might be the only one here who's ever had to hold a car from rolling down a slight incline (rear wheel drive, jacked up rear wheels, wheel chock slipped out from under front wheel), but EVERYONE knows that you cant stop a moving car by hand.

My point is, if that tractor had brakes that were so useless that it could not remain parked, there is no way that it was driven, period. It wouldve wrecked at the very first intersection.

Also, i should say, i had a rollaway truck one time. I was stressing because i couldnt get my tandems to release, and i got out of the truck and ignored the alarm that goes off when you open the door with the brakes released, next thign you know the truck is rolling. I jumped back in and stopped it. I've seen veteran drivers actually wreck trucks because they forgot to set the brakes...but i do not believe it is a mistake that anyone ever repeats.

I hate to argue about all trls. have spring brakes.
I have a 2008 trailking lowboy and it does not have spring brakes on any axle...
I can set the trl. park brake and yes they will setup, but I can drain the air from the tanks and it will go down the road or hill...
Spring brakes you have to do what they refer as "cage" them to get them to release if you have no air supply to them to get them to release....

I was refering to with no air the brakes will set.
This is for spring brake systems.

Yes I do know what I am talking about Phroziac, just did'nt word it correctly for you to understand. Opps I'm bad:biggrin_25514:

Yeah someone started with them here in Georgia and sounded quite happy. Actually they have a yard very close to my home. From what I hear you work hard and there's nothing out of the ordinary. If I find the thread I'll post it here.
