Fascinating! I hate big business, period. but then, i'd like to own one. but then, i'd have to put up with all the whining....
I hate cre just as much as i hate some of the other places i used to work for. but, BUT, somewhere along the line, i hate saying it, i learned the way they do things __ muhahahaha!!! i also did some other research and found that you have to go through about a million people to get 100000 that are willing and able to go through the rigors of being an otr driver. (huh?)
I know, after two years of LEASING, that there is money to be made there, or any trucking outfit. my taxes came back last spring, and somewhere along the line i actually made 52K. also, somewhere along that same line, i blew (yes BLEW) some 16 k on my truck in parts and repairs and toys. probably a buttload on things to keep the truck making money, like tires, maintenance, the occasional bath for baby....
but to the point. i built my reputation from the ground up. i had already been an otr driver some years before. not enough for their tastes, but i already knew what it would take. did any of you actually think that this was an easy job like a factory? c'mon, lets get real here. if i was still married, especially with kids, there ain't no way i'd be behind a wheel. this aint chrysler where you put a bolt into a hole all day long and get paid in cake.
as far as the help goes, i have them eating from my hand, but i also feed them, and WELL! i'll bet that the salt lake yard taxes alone are around at least half a mil a year. then there is the pay for all those office people. probably that every WEEK. I'd rather be on their good side, they can break me with a stroke of a key. but then, i'm no brown noser, either. when i have a REAL problem, like a warranty issue that happened once- ohh, how my demeanor changes! (Is this >that< guy?-Yea it's him! its a legit gripe, help him!) and they did, too. 3700 bucks worth of warranties, and they helped me battle freightliner. some of my old quotes (threats?) are STILL in the computer! (wooo. I said THAT?)
i'll tell all of you what, i've been at the other side of the desk. those shoes are not the ones i wear right now, i wear slippers to drive (ask me later). my job is to keep my wheels turning as best i can, and train new or refresh drivers in the ways of the world, but i do more. i also train my drivers in how to LIVE on the road. eating right, showering, finding fun in wierd situations. i run a kill-it-and-eat-it truck. if its moving around the cabinet or fridge, and it looks tasty, kill it and eat it, you won't go hungry on my truck. i'm making plenty, and i remember where i came from.
but, i'd rather be remembered in the office that i'm one of the few that brings a smile to your face when i visit, the occasional gift from a place that you can't go, and the one that makes your job easy with well trained students. they do their part by helping me when i screw up my eobr logs, or i can't reach a shipper/receiver, or if i have weather or traffic issues and im guaranteed to be late. i do my part by getting loads across the counrty as soon as i can, and if i'm running ahead, i have the opportunity to save another load because the driver(s) are out of hours, or worse.
this is most decidedly a dog eat dog world. i'm not a big dog, but i'm a fast enough one to avoid being eaten.
i'm not defending c r england in any way. i'm just letting you know that the playing field is more level than you think. there is enough blame for everyone. not all are cut out for this job. but i do give my students the full boat, even if they figure out they wont drive otr. why? because they may like driving a dirt derby better. (dump truck)
her's another thing. i decided long ago that i would never give any employer an excuse to fire me. so far, i've never broken that promise. i'll tell you what, though, i've quit quite a few. most have been because they actually DID break the law. I don't see that with england. it's actually spelled out quite clear, and i used to write some 400 individual contracts a year! (what on earth did i get into?) two year contract. my cell has a two year contract... hmm, that aint so bad...
about a month and a half left....
if i buy the truck, no more var miles... that's...
cripes, i could make a fortune....

gotta go, i'm going to go crunch some numbers!

oh, for the record, i aint no driver. i'm a displaced construction worker with a cdl, and that's exactly what i told a belligerent cop one day. (he backed off, quick) [IMG][IMG]

If you lease a truck it is exactly like owning your own buisness. You have to work harder, and smarter than anyone else, or you will fail badly.I am not defending any company, but after reading various posts it seems alot of guys that lease have NO idea how much work, and dedication it takes! Driving a truck for a living is a hard life style, and alot of people that get into it have No idea what they are getting into.

Whatever the reason(s) is/are for a wannaBee not knowin' what they're gettin' into, C.R. England isn't exactly forthcoming or up front in providing an accurate description of the Big truck truckin' industry in general, or what unconventional, scandalous and deceptive business ethics C.R. England will soon subject them to, in particular.
Something of a dis-service at best, I'd say.
And closer to a classic bait-N-switch tactic.

I've read some of the opinions that question the wisdom of folks with very limited experience who think they're capable of handling a flease and what goes with that territory, wonderin' just how stupid those who go for the lease program are to jump in with both eyes wide shut with no prior experience. Written off as total morons who deserve what they get for thinkin' they're capable of handlin' the program so soon.

What I find peculiar is the large number of wannaBees at C.R.E. who come up with that hair-brained idea in the first place. When I went to orientation for another truckin' company, I don't recall any of the new hires comin' up with an idea like that. Not one. Yet C.R.E.'s cup runith over with those who think they want to be their own boss.
    Hmmmmmmmmmmmm

Is there any doubt that the bug is put into their ear by C.R. England, --- in the first place? Could it be that C.R.E. picks and chooses to hire those most likely to be easily persuaded to go where angels fear to tread?
One thing for sure, as illustrated by this thread that originated around what, ......... four years ago?, is that the stories about C.R.E. are still the same today as they were back then. Nothin' seems to have changed for the better. After four+ years, it's obvious C.R.E. is aware of how many fail to reach the dreams dangled in front of them like a carrot. C.R.E. is aware of the failure rate, yet C.R.E. continues their hard-sell approach to those that are ignorant, and/or gullible, and/or desperate, and/or trusting enough that they'll believe the word of C.R.E. pitchmen and shills, who are really only out to take advantage of an opportunity for their own, personal, monetary gain as they trample over anyone in their way to find happiness and better pay, --- paid for by the misery that their greed generates for those they've convinced.
    No shame
    No blame
    That's lame.

It's my contention that the bulk of any blame should be directed to those who allow things to keep happening, with absolutely no attempts made to prevent the continuation of, and/or bring a potential end to, their unethical business practices. It's C.R.E who sets the ball rollin' that will crush a newBee if they so much as hesitate.

There will always be those who fail without any assistance.
There will always be those anxious to assist impending failure when it's profitable for them to do so. I've heard they don't consider that to be wrong. us
If a fool and their money are soon parted, the Sons-0-Chester will soon be there to claim it. A dishonest, unethical and lazy way to take a buck made by someone else, who, accordin' to C.R.E., is lazy and has "poor work ethics".

    "Poor work ethics"?
And the "work ethics" of rip-off artists are considered what?
    Stellar?

Then again, I guess it's a possibility that all the negativity is just a big conspiracy being perpetrated by a few disgruntled, former C.R.E. employees unable to come up with any new stories, so they just depend on nobody rememberin' or comparin' history notes to realize that what's written on the walls of the dirty, smelly, hotel in which C.R.E. reserves a room for multiple wannaBees to, ........... uhhhhh,.............. enjoy?, wasn't written as recently as might be imagined.

C.R. England believes in equality and rights, and therefore reserves their rights to discretely discriminate against any and all who provide the slightest opportunity for C.R.E. to take advantage of.

Oh well, Latter Day Saints re-wrote the Bible against the advice of He who commanded It be written. How far of a stretch of the imagination is it to figure that they didn't stop there? Why not tarnish the Golden Rule while they're at it?, then hack it to pieces with a double edged sword because it lost it's glitter.

Guess I missed this thread somewhere over time. I still cant see with the high turn over rate how they are able to get the freight to the customer on time.

I forsee CRE turning into a JB Hunt over time, and shipping the majority over the rails.

CR England simply takes advantage of the needs of newbies. Someone explain how this isn't like any other major entity in America?

Not for defending them because I'm definitely not however newbies have to shoulder a large portion of the blame in their failures. How many times have old timers warned of a company screwing drivers and they seldom heed the advice of senior intelligence. Doesn't this sound familiar like when our parents would give advice to us and we didn't follow it.

Now as for a company I think that they are about the worst I've seen next to PAM Transport. Dangling the lease carrot only to pay for their overpriced fleet of tractors, poor pay, clueless staff, I could go on however the only thing more damaging to a company than high turnover is to not go there at all. I know people sometimes have no other choice and have to go to places they otherwise wouldn't however the line needs to be drawn at times.

Lastly we can't seriously be mad at a company that only gets away with what they are allowed to and until people begin to demand more from this sham of a company they will continue to function as the backyard penny pinching screwover operation they always have been. Just my soapbox moment, Y'all drive safe today!!!

I'm conflicted about many of the points that you and aftershock make for two reasons:

    1. I am an educated man who could not get a job that would pay me what I need to make to support my family. CRE gave me a chance.

    2. I recently graduated a 37 year old uneducated American born man from Kansas who told me he has been poor his whole life. I had to teach him how to read a map and calculate miles per gallon. He went on to lease a truck and called me today to let me know that he made $1,000 for the week. It was a proud moment for the both of us. CRE gave him a chance.

I understand that most people who start training at CRE will not make it as successful drivers. In my opinion, it is worth it for those who do...

Every once in awhile there is a success story among the hundreds of negative threads about this company. Glad that young man was able to make 1k in a week. However the true testament will come over time and not just for 1 specific week. Hopefully he continues to do well, as a whole though just because a company gets lucky once or twice doesn't change the face of the organization-trash is trash no matter how you wash it.

Good for him ... but was that his first week, when he doesn't have to cover a truck payment? Is he running a student already?

There are those who come into this business that have had tough go in life - where they may have only made $300-$400 a week ... when they could find work. So any kind of steady paycheck will make them happy.

Like I said before, my son and I were very successful at CRE, by CRE's standards. But I'm a ##### at heart and an extra $.16 per mile was an easy decision for me to move on. Landing at company that was better managed and provides real management tools to run a business was just a bonus.
