Centerline is now charging $12.50 to verify employment. I came off the road for a few months in order to take care of some health issues; I started working for Centerline. After getting issues resolved, I decided to go back to work for Hogan Dedicated.

I attended orientation at Hogan (Columbus, OH) from Monday 1/20/14 to Wednesday 1/22/14. By the end of orientation, Centerline STILL had not verified employment and I wound up sitting in a hotel room for 2 more days, then went home to Dayton.

On 1/23/14, I spoke with the Hogan recruiter who indicated that Centerline is now charging $12.50 to verify employment. Further, after Hogan paid the money (On 1/23/14), Centerline still wouldn't fill out verification paperwork. Today is 1/26/14. Hopefully tomorrow, Centerline will do the verification.

In times past, I would simply have shown check stubs, bank statements of direct deposit, logs, etc.. to get around this hurdle. In today's world, companies like Hogan Dedicated will not accept these as they only prove that I worked there; they do not show a safety history or a drug test history. I don't know the who, what, when, where, why or how regarding companies charging fees for employment verification, but, this is the first I have heard of it. (Hogan cannot rely upon DAC/Hire Right as not every company uses these and my employment with Centerline is so recent, they may not appear on the report).

Here is what concerns me: This could be a new "Big Thing" that is being done to reduce the instances of drivers job hopping. As a driver who wants to obey the rules, take few chances, and limit risk of costly fines and injury to my record..I've had a few jobs lately. I'm thinking that if every one of my previous employers adopted this as standard business practice, I could be in a world of hurt.

Tomorrow, 1/27/14, I am going to contact the Ohio Attorney General's Office to research the legality of this. I am also going to file for unemployment from Centerline as they haven't called me for an assignment. Any other suggestions?

Many employers are going to third party employment verification, Allied Barton ( a security guard company) has a 3rd party that charges a few bucks.

There are companies that don't answer the phone, unless the caller knows the extension.

There are companies that have only a recorded message.

And then there are the franchised staffing companies that set up in strip malls and exist for a year or so....
