Boy, you would've hated my outfit then. Smith system took less than a minute:

Safety guy: do you know the Smith system?

    Me: yep.

    End of presentation.

My load securement class took less than an hour. Went out to the training trailer, talked about the various loads we pull and how to tie them down, convinced the trainer I had a healthy sense of survival and a good dose of le sense common, and called it a day.

Picked up tarping on the road with the able assistance and advice of other drivers. Only been doing full time flatbed for six months and now have newer drivers looking at my tarps and asking for help. I must be doing something right, I guess.

Don't look at the road directly in front of the truck. Look down the road a ways and aim for that spot. In my experience it's easier to keep the truck from weaving side to side the further down the road you look. Guys who tend to watch the road directly in front of the truck tend to have more side to side movement.

It's like Get the Big Picture but more in front of you and further out... and then some. :D

What I got from the OP's mention of the lack of the Smith System might been his observation of a lack of a safety program. To some that is a big issue, understandably so.

I was taught that this would be around curves to keep trailer in same lane. WTF do I know though. Just a daycab driver with a van.

If he would have lasted more than 2 weeks, he would have seen what a great safety program they do have. They do go over smith system, however you will miss it if you sleep through orientation. I'm sure he also missed the part where you tarp outside in all elements, likely because he was asleep.

It actually means to look 15-18 seconds ahead of your vehicle. This give you better perception as to what you need to do to remain safe.

    I really missed that one.
I thought "aim high" was for iron sights, and long range disgruntaled employees.
    What am I missing?
