I start with Melton on 3/19/14, been away from FB sense the 90's, so I guess you could call me a rookie at FBing, never done much tarpping until I got here, can't say I had the same experience as the OP, all the guys/gals I have came in contact with, have been great, although haven't needed any help, thus so far, had many come over and start helping, either me asking, , rolling tarps, throwing straps, or ? Yea! Tarpping, securing in freezing weather sucks, but comes with the job, I personally, love it here set Melton, only thing that would smoke leave? Is a local gig, home ever day

20 years in the industry...and still no common sense. Embarrassing.
Can't figure out how to tarp a load in 2 days training? Didn't know you'd be outside tarping? Never took a 10% grade in 20 years prior? Need to do the Smith System in orientation to be assured you can drive safely?
I guess some people need their hand held every step of the way---even after 20 years on the road.:biggrin_2556:

This thread stinks, and I barely got past the original post, never mind 7 pages. Moving on!

I've always wondered if all those loads really NEED a tarp. I pulled a load of #3 2x2s and 2x4s out of Canada as a back haul that was required to be tarped to protect from the elements. I got it to Chicago two days later and they unloaded it in the rain and unloaded it into puddles you could almost swim through!! How much stuff really needs a tarp!! But that is what they pay for!!

We would get in aluminum logs, and billets used in aluminum extrusion. They were picked up sitting outside in the elements, loaded on the truck, tarped, driven to our facility, untarped, and then set down outside, in the elements.
The company didn't want the road salt, grime, etc, to contaminate them.

Just read about the Smith system of driving . Sure glad I know how to do that now . Crappy driving school and companies I have worked for never even mentioned the good Mr. smith . It is a wonder I am still:biggrin_25522: alive . So sorry to all the people I ran over, crushed , ran off road , scared the heck out of and otherwise terrorized with my bad driving . Was not my fault as I never new Mr. Smith and his one of a kind driving system .
On another note . I am still planning on trying to be a Melton driver . I here it is not everyone that makes the cut but I will give it my best shot when I go . Going to get twic and hazmat first and do some studying on load securement and such as I think that will be a good point on my evaluation .

We tarp loads of rocks . Do not want them rocks being exposed to the elements . Actually the state law here is 1" or smaller must be tarped . I always tarp them all just to make sure no one can claim I broke their windshield and to keep from being pulled over by fmcsi to ask about my rocks .
Maybe some of them companies are just concerned about the load coming loose and tarp helps keep it from flying off truck as opposed to the weather ?
