I Worked for melton 2 weeks and the drivers i came in contact with had little respect for me being a newbie. I would only recomend this company for experienced flatbed drivers . I was a 53 foot van driver and went over to melton for a change to try flatbed. The oreintation was 4 days and they forgot in their training to do the smith system driver training. Also the securement of loads class was 2 days and tarptarp class was a one hour crash course with one demonstration of how to secure and fold a tarp. If any of you are thinking of going to Melton Truck Lines you need to go out for 2 weeks or so with a trainer in my opinion. One of my lods delivered down a 10 percent grade into a open pit mine .You will be outdoors in all kinds of weather and the shippers sometimes provide a secuerment area for tarping and sometimes not. I just want the drivers that come over from van to make sure the know what they are getting their selves into going to flatbed . Melton Truck Lines is a Good fit for some but wasn't for me.:biggrin_25510:

This is a good time to reiterate that flatbedding is NOT for everybody. I suspect that you may have had a similar experience at most any flatbed carrier who takes drivers with little/no flatbed experience.

Good post here and yes skateboard is not for many. Melton is one the better out here they sure provide everything you need. Love the way they setup their trucks.

Sorry it worked out that way. As was said above it's not for everyone. As for other drivers not respecting you, yea there are some like that with me but more often then not I become friends with a lot of them I meet.

And to add to what I said earlier ... even if they provided a really good crash course training program in tarping and securement and tips and tricks of the trade, and such, you still may have found flatbedding was not for you. Most do flatbed for just the points you mentioned in the OP, they enjoy the challenges and breaks from tedious van/reefer work

Good answers. I knew from the beginning flatbedding was not for me. No interest at all, but I respect the guys and gals that do it.

PS- When my young daughter rode with me a few years ago and seen a tarped load she said " That guy has a secret!"

Sorry to hear it didn't work out for you. I recently retired and am new to this industry. In my research, TMC looked like a good Flatbed company. I liked what I saw in their training program and the structured environment. It would have been a good place for me to start. Unfortunately for me, I live outside their hiring area. They don't have enough freight to get me home. If you are still looking for FB you might look into them. Good Luck...

When I did FB, other drivers always helped other FB drivers, tying down, tarping etc. usually I had to ask them NOT to help me, because I had my way of doing things and they just messed me up.
