My partner and I were hired to drive LCV team with this company in early March of this year. Given the usual sales talk from the local recruiter in Winnipeg promising a regular scheduled run between Wpg and Calgary, lots of steady miles. Attended their orientation in Lethbridge AB and Calgary. You should know that H&R only pays $100 for orientation and does not include any meals whatsoever. Our options were either to take the bus to Lethbridge or drive ourselves with the promise to be re-imbursed when we arrived. We opted to drive. When we arrived, the first obstacle we encountered was that they wanted to to re-imburse our gas receipts on our first pay cheque - 3 weeks away. Aftersome haggling, they relented and offered a t-check.
3 days orientation in Lethbridge was painless and boring. Put up in a dumpy, noisy hotel - drunken fights in the parking lot every night. For the last day, we had to drive up to Calgary for LCV "training".
Once out on the road, we found that we were sitting as much as driving. Kept track of our wait times but was never paid a single cent - paid only for the few miles we ran. We were sitting as much as 40 hours a week!! All service and repairs are done in Calgary at Penske or Ryder - no paid time for that either.
After 4 weeks, we realized that we couldn't afford to work for these people. Lucky to clear $800 in a week and so we gave notice. To add insult to injury, they stiffed us for the $100 orientation!!
H&R has an on going problem with driver retention because of how they treat their drivers and have had to resort to hiring europeans to fill their dricver vacancies.

Canadian carriers leave a lot to be desired. I flew up to Montreal from Chicago several years ago to work for Challenger, after having faxed them all my paperwork, and after I had asked repeatedly for them to double-check that I could transfer my CDL to a Canadian Class A so I could work for them, if that was necessary. Several phone calls ahead of time. Recruiter told me to come, made an appointment for me in Montreal. See, I was a Canadian Permanent Resident with a U.S. CDL (lol, long story). Of course once I got to Montreal, I was told the license was not acceptable, and I would need to train for the six months required in Quebec, after proving residence there. Stupid. Now, sorry for digression, back to your story. No, H&R doesn't have to 'resort to hiring Europeans'. They are part of the subsidized Canadian government program to hire foreign workers at less pay. They recruit some Canadians, just to shuffle them through, to support their claims that there aren't enough Canadian drivers who will drive for them.Scams all around.Funny, but those European licenses to drive a big rig don't create any hassles for anybody. Same for Jamaicans.
