My partner and I were hired to drive LCV team with this company in early March of this year. Given the usual sales talk from the local recruiter in Winnipeg promising a regular scheduled run between Wpg and Calgary, lots of steady miles. Attended their orientation in Lethbridge AB and Calgary. You should know that H&R only pays $100 for orientation and does not include any meals whatsoever. Our options were either to take the bus to Lethbridge or drive ourselves with the promise to be re-imbursed when we arrived. We opted to drive. When we arrived, the first obstacle we encountered was that they wanted to to re-imburse our gas receipts on our first pay cheque - 3 weeks away. Aftersome haggling, they relented and offered a t-check.
3 days orientation in Lethbridge was painless and boring. Put up in a dumpy, noisy hotel - drunken fights in the parking lot every night. For the last day, we had to drive up to Calgary for LCV "training".
Once out on the road, we found that we were sitting as much as driving. Kept track of our wait times but was never paid a single cent - paid only for the few miles we ran. We were sitting as much as 40 hours a week!! All service and repairs are done in Calgary at Penske or Ryder - no paid time for that either.
After 4 weeks, we realized that we couldn't afford to work for these people. Lucky to clear $800 in a week and so we gave notice. To add insult to injury, they stiffed us for the $100 orientation!!
H&R has an on going problem with driver retention because of how they treat their drivers and have had to resort to hiring europeans to fill their dricver vacancies.
