Guy I worked with used to drive for them. Pulled into the terminal in Iowa City and they fired him, gave him no bus fare, $, etc and he had to find a friend from where he lived in Southern IL to drive up to pick him up and take him home. This was when they paid .$50 a mile. He said that part was true but averaged 1400 miles per week...
Heartland Express - I was asking for it.

This is after the fact: but, you had an option, take time off under the FELA, Family Emergency Leave Act. During this time of great personal reflection i would of contemplated over alot of my previous life experiences: Family, Friends, Company...the direction of my own personal life with regards how much time i dedicate to this or that...

Or FMLA Family Medical Leave Act. However you only qualify for FMLA if you have been with an employer 12 months or more.

I didn't even ask Gordon for any help when I left, despite that home was in Indiana and departed truck in Rancho. Worked out just fine for me, had visit with 93-year-old Mom, living with a sister at the time in nearby Riverside. To get to Rancho, traded loads in Colorado with another driver. When Dispatch came in the next morning, Pacific had approved the swap and I was hell-bent for California! Took city bus from Rancho terminal to Airport. Whoosh!! Thankfully, car in Gordon lot in Indy started right up.

Employees are eligible for leave if they have worked for their employer at least 12 months, at least 1,250 hours over the past 12 months, and work at a location where the company employs 50 or more employees within 75 miles. Whether an employee has worked the minimum 1,250 hours of service is determined according to FLSA principles for determining compensable hours or work.
Myself, i've been retrained on the FEML application for use.
attch, is to determine type of qualifying hours:
