there is always the family medical leave act, It protects the employee if there is a need to leave work in order to care for a family member. If someone has a true need to take off they cannot be discriminated against but you have to go through your HR dept and take the correct path. If you just say " I need to take off from my job to care for a family member" and don't do it right you are gonna get fired almost 100 % of the time.

Have you also considered either online bill pay (as noted above) or power of attorney for someone to do it for you?
-
I believe you have to have a minimum of 6 months employ to be eligible for this and there are other stipulations as well.

[h=1]Family and Medical Leave Act[/h]Overview
The FMLA entitles eligible employees of covered employers to take unpaid, job-protected leave for specified family and medical reasons with continuation of group health insurance coverage under the same terms and conditions as if the employee had not taken leave. Eligible employees are entitled to:
- Twelve workweeks of leave in a 12-month period for:
- the birth of a child and to care for the newborn child within one year of birth;
- the placement with the employee of a child for adoption or foster care and to care for the newly placed child within one year of placement;
- to care for the employees spouse, child, or parent who has a serious health condition;
- a serious health condition that makes the employee unable to perform the essential functions of his or her job;
- any qualifying exigency arising out of the fact that the employees spouse, son, daughter, or parent is a covered military member on covered active duty; or
- Twenty-six workweeks of leave during a single 12-month period to care for a covered service member with a serious injury or illness if the eligible employee is the service members spouse, son, daughter, parent, or next of kin (military caregiver leave).

Would the results have been any different anywhere else? Is it the company or is it just the business we are in. My last student had a family member die and we were about 2k miles away. We communicated with dispatch (weekend dispatch no less) busted our humps and got him home for the funeral. That's my experience with USX. Communicate and you can get things done, just wonder off and don't expect the job to just be waiting for you, same as anywhere else.
TruckDuo and streetglider Thank this.
