I believe .38 cpm is STARTING wage with 6 months verifiable experience.

I have heard some of our new solo drivers actually make .48 cpm based on previous experience.

Teams are making over .50 cpm (with 5 years exp)

Granted there is still some older equipment being used which includes trailers as well as tractors. I believe other large carriers such as New Penn, Sai, Estes, YRC, Old Dominion, Etc routinely use trucks that are 10 and even 20 years old in their day to day operations.

In this economy a secure job with benefits is hard to come by. If you believe Eastern is beneath you then you do not need to work here that is your prerogative dannyboy.

Fortunately Eastern has a solid core of hard working drivers that care more about the pay, benefits, and home time than an old truck.

I agree with respect to small sleepers, $400 fuel purchase and older equipment however, I don't see them as being a company you should beware of. I drove for Eastern in 2006 and I enjoyed it, some days were better than others, but you'll find that with any job. As far as miles go, 550 per day is pretty good given the economy; I heard and again it's "hearsay" that Swift has laid off over 4,000 drivers since the beginning of the year, need I say more? I always respected everyone at Eastern and they respected me (it's a 2 way street). As far as I'm concerned Eastern is one of the better trucking companies out there. "You reap what you sow".

I have seen some trucks they run around NJ that I can't believe they are on the road. I stand by that statement. From the input on this thread they must treat thier drivers well for them to fight for a company on here and do it intelligently. If they are paying 48 cents a mile that is respectable because you can't get more than 2200-2400 TOPS New Englang-Jersey freight during good times. To each thier own and if you like it I am proud of you and hope you contiue driving there neighbor.

You are right about Swift. They are parking a lot of trailers and are downsizing their operation. Mike S can hold out till this recession is over. He owns everything and has millions under his matress. They arent the best from an operation standpoint but from your view, they will be around and they will have steady work . you can do worse. You better have a thick skin though.

The safety guys name is Gary. He has been with Eastern a couple of years now. He can be a hard nose from what I have heard from others especially when it comes to logs. I have had limited contact with him (I am rarely in North Brunswick Nj) but have never had any issues with the man myself.

Do not bail out Warner. Chances are you will rarely ever see Gary anyway. We do have a mix of super 10's straight 10's and automatics. It is a good idea to familiarize yourself with each one as you will be assigned to what ever truck happens to be available once you complete orientation. The key is to get in the drivers seat and start learning the ropes at EFW while making some money. Remember you do not need to be friends with Gary to do your job. Customer service is what the dispatchers will be looking for. Please the customers with on time service and the dispatchers will take notice and reward your efforts.

For the first few weeks it will be a steep learning curve but stay calm and you will do fine. If you need to talk pm me and I will give you my cell number. I am on almost every night.

I have sent a pm to you with my cell number. Call me if you want to talk about Eastern.

I respect that you go out of your way to help a newcomer to the company, especially one who is 26 and wet behind the ears. But the fact is if he cant deal with Gary during a road teat, how can he deal with Ray and Brian when hes late at a stop. You are the ultimate optimist. I wish I could be like you sometimes. I am the ultimate realist. If you are that thin skined the first day, he wont last a week. You have the personallity to deal with all the bull that goes on. most others dont. I give a different outlook, being on the inside. I tried to care about the person not just the body in the seat, but the company didnt, fill in company with whatever name you want. I dont think Mike S. knows what really goes on there, if he did, all of them would be gone.

True. Warner is younger than the both of us but he has more opportunities than you and I had when we first started. He has resources and information at his fingertips if he chooses to utilize them. The only thing I get out of it is the chance to help a younger driver avoid some of the mistakes I made when coming up through the ranks. The only thing I like more than driving is teaching.

Hmmm. What can I say about Gary?... I have had very little interaction with him. I have more time in with Eastern than he does so never had to go through orientation or even a "check ride" with him. I asked Kim what she thought of Gary during her check ride. She confirmed he does have a tendency to grab the stick shift when a gear is missed and made her feel very nervous as well. She simply bit her tongue realizing she would be paired up with me and would be driving an automatic from day 1. The way she looked at it was; It really didn't matter if she had difficulty shifting because she would always be with me and I was assigned to an automatic.

I know it is always stressful to begin a new job. Sometimes having a sympathetic ear or at least someone to talk to can help ease that transition. Remember, anything worth having is worth working for. Besides, if this job was too easy then everyone would want to do it. :biggrin_25525:
