Before I get into it there are a couple things that may help you decide if I am just a ticked off driver.
I work for Van-ex. My co-driver and I have reached the #2 spot on our dispatchers load board. Air Freight dept will sometimes call us before they plan a load to make sure we can take it (have hours and can make the appt). Our dispatch sent us a message yesterday thanking us for staying on the truck until we were released. It seems over half the drivers took off and went home before they were released. They had a potential load so we sat half a day waiting to see and then finally got sent home. He gave us two extra days for being the only team willing to "stick with me". Even when we are late our customer satisfaction rate is through the roof. We have been asked to rescue tractors, drivers, and of course loads. Basically we give it our best effort no matter what.
Now on to those facts.
This is your typical CDL mill company. They proudly tell you in orientation that they hire an average 100 new drivers each and every week. They only run 1250 trucks. Thats 2500 drivers in the seats at any given time. Factor in 5000 new drivers hired a year and you have a tremendous turnover. There are millions of reasons for this. But first and foremost this is the way they want it.
They make more money off hiring new drivers under their contract terms than they ever could as a real trucking company. I will gladly supply numbers to show what I mean if anyone desires.
I have been suspended twice now.
The first time was for refusing to haul a hazmat load because I did not have a hazmat endorsment. They managed to delete all those records from their system when they found out my mother in law was in the legal dept at Panther.
The second time was for refusing a load.....when I was on home time. It was a 30 mile run, for free. A favor to dispatch. I was sitting 3 hours from my truck and asked to drive the city in search of an empty and deliver it 30 miles away to a customer. Then I could resume my home time. This one just happened so the result of the "appeals process" is still to be determined.
Further they advertise 5000 miles a week average. I have run 40,000 in 3.5 months. The math says it all. I am in a truck that has a little over 500,000 miles. Last month I broke down 4 times. Each time I caught hell from dispatch for shutting down. Sorry, I find brakes important!!
My co-driver has been paid twice in 3 months. Payroll says they are looking into what happened. Yea right!
Communication between the company and the drivers does not exist. If you have a problem, good luck. Just dont be late.
We get daily qualcomm messages about acidents. Obviously we dont have them daily. But every time we do the company tells us what the driver did wrong. I dont imagine anyone here thinks the driver is at fault 100% of the time. Yes we make mistakes. But 100%? Just once it would be nice to hear them say someone else contributed to the accident.....even their own lack of quality maintenance.
Last week in the snow storms over OK, Tx I ran out of washer fluid. I stopped at a fuel stop and had some added. They refused to pay for it saying it was an "unapproved item". The last time they gave me any was in Ca....2 pint bottles of concentrate. Like to see them tell the DOT we arent allowed a clean windshield in a ice storm, or any other time for that matter.
Weather shut downs are ok. But do not be late! If you encounter a state highway that is closed that is not an excuse to be late.
Rembursments. You, the driver, pays all tolls and they pay you back on pay day. Provided you send reciepts of course. However they also tax and garnish those for child support and income taxes. Didnt think you could double tax a person. They dont admit doing this, but when I am owed money and my ex wife and the government gets it they cant hardly deny this practice.
There is one bright side to this company. IF you can make the 8 month contract you can say you have driveN the worst equipment in the worst state of repair and in the worst conditions possible. You can feel confident that you just might make it in this industry yet.
Bottom line. STAY AWAY FROM THESE CRIMINALS!!!!!!!!!!!! | i too went here for "refresher class"..i am from here in iowa and its known here as the"cedar rapids school of trucking(c.r.s.t.)they train their"drivers"at Kirkwood Community College they charge unknowing people upwards of 4-5000 dollars but if you go thru kirkwood directly its only about 2300...WHY SUCH BIG MARKUP IN PRICE?? SEE Kirkwood Community College CDL SCHOOL PAGE...by the way cost me 700.00 for refresher Cost
Tuition*(includes books)$2,200
Drug Test$30-$70
(cost depends on individual clinic)DOT Physical (Long Form)$50-$100CDL Permit$12 (obtained from the DOT)
