So which company is actually good for newbies in trucking? So all seem like crooks.

CRST vs Gordon Trucking

I am familiar with CRST Dedicated Services (not Van-ex) and I tell you, if you are going to run team, go with a company that specializes in teams like CRST. I've posted before about GORDON Trucking (WHO SUCK), unlike Gordon (who do not require driver managers be former truckers) my CRST driver manager was a road warrior and knew what it was like to be on the road. If I told him I thought it was unsafe to attempt to chain up on cabbage patch at 2:00 am in darkness, blowing snow, below freezing weather - so miserable it makes a grown man cry - he understood and agreed it would be safer to wait until first light.

With CRST Dedicated, I can fuel up whenever and wherever I want (as long as they take Comdata), I never had to do a check call. In fact, I rarely even talked to my driver manager.

Gordon Trucking driver managers will try to get you to run unsafe and illegal. One example (of several), my tractor had a clutch that was going to give out any second. No matter how hard I tried, he/she would not let me get it fixed before I left SOCAL to head up north. To get to the point, the clutch gave out uphill on Siskiyou summit - narrowly avoiding getting rear-ended by faster moving trucks, and ending up getting escorted off I-5 by 3 CHP units. This was a Hazmat load and could have been a major environmental catastrophe with lives lost if the load caught fire. Gordon ended up towing out another tractor so I could continue the load up north. POINT is Gordon does not trust their drivers to make decisions concerning safety. They entrust these decisions to their driver managers who have never driven a truck in their life. This is totally unacceptable. The following paragraph refers to Gordon Trucking :

NEVER WORK FOR A TRUCKING COMPANY WHERE THE DRIVER MANAGERS ARE NOT FORMER TRUCKERS. THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT IT'S LIKE TO BE ON THE ROAD AWAY FROM FAMILY AND FRIENDS. THEY CANNOT EMPATHIZE WITH YOU, THEREFORE THEY DO NOT SYMPATHIZE WITH YOU. THEY CALL YOU A LIAR WHEN YOU REPORT A UNSAFE SITUATION (YES, GETTING THE FREIGHT THERE ON TIME IS WORTH MORE THAN A HUMAN LIFE), THEY HAVE NO INTEGRITY AND WILL RESORT TO COLLUSION WITH OTHER DRIVER MANAGERS (TO FAULT THE DRIVER) TO COVER THEIR ###. They crossed the line and did things just for the sake of being mean.

In my humble opinion as a military brat with 20 years military experience of my own (including real world frontline) and 4 years trucking working with people from every state, you can't go wrong working for a company based in Iowa, Nebraska, Indiana, and yes - Texas. They raise 'em right out there. It's a mentality thing. Westerners tend to be selfish (especially the reprobates that work for Gordon Trucking). Not so in the aforementioned states. Like I said, they raise 'em right...and if you want to meet a bunch of characters, black, white, whatever, check out the FFE drivers lounge in Lancaster, TX. I recall with fondness the resident dreadlocked rastafarian who was there no matter what time, week, or month I pulled through. I don't know if he was a trucker but he was always there to give encouragement and cheer. Anyways.....

Be polite out there, set your standards high and set the example. Respect isn't given, it's earned. Peace.

this thread is for ######## about crst, not gordon, silly. besides, crst dispatchers are mostly NOT former drivers. infact, i found my last fleet manager from CRST van ex on facebook recently, and hes a kid my age who went to college for 4 years, never driven a truck before. LOL. crst does have a program where they send one fm out every month to ride with a trucker for a month.....they started this about a year ago, and judging by the amount of faces in their operations building.....most of their dispatchers have never been in a truck.
