Angry US Express worse than covenant

I thought working for Covenant transport was bad, until I started work for the brother at US Express. I was given a local job then after 2 mth. was pulled from account for a reason still unknown as I was never given a write up or one they would show me. I worked 6 days a week 14 hrs. a day sometimes not making it home due to the hours. I was told I would have to go back OTR. This is one way they scoop to find OTR drivers since nobody wants to put up with them. Now they are only wanting O/O as they do not want to pay gas prices. US Express , Nick the day will come when you maybe forced to also leave your family for 6-8 wk. at a time then what will you do? what a worthless company

Heck OP I worked OTR for them for over 5 years and only was offered a local job by them when I was on my way to the OLD SLC terminal to turn in my truck. I ran local for them for a year but my inquiry's to why I was not getting the raises I was promised caused them to fire me for, and this is verbatim, " Pattern of confrontation with management"

Heck at least you got offered continued employment. They do not need a reason written or verbal . At will employment means just that. They can fire your kester if they did not like the pattern on the shirt you wore to work if they wanted to.

When I was there the 2 main ways to get fired was 1. get in a wreck. and 2. get a complaint lodged against you by a shipper or a receiver ie. "the customer".

I was left nearly stranded by us xpress!!!

I thought US Xpress was a good outfit. LIttle did I know! I was accepted into their orientation program last week. Took the Greyhound bus ride from hell from NJ out to Ohio. I passed the road test, drug test, DOT physical, including lifting 48 pounds over my head. I was into my third day of orientation, thinking that "Yes! I'm IN"!, when I get a note telling me to call Human Resources. I called and was informed that "I did not meet their criteria"! After all of that, I got bumped! To add insult to injury, they did NOT PAY MY BUS FARE HOME!!! If I didn't have a credit card, I would have been stranded out in Ohio. I would have been forced to hitchhike home, which could have had a disastrous ending, (ending up raped, or worse, murdered! I am a woman, by the way). Is it illegal for a company to leave you stranded like that???? I was so sure that I would get this job, that I quit the miserable job that I had....so now, unemployed, and don't know if I am eligble for unemployment until I find another job.

This has always been my greatest fear about going to ANY company-sponsored trucking school. Why did they let you go? What did they cite as the reason? I'm interested because I want to avoid the same thing happening to me and anyone else. Good luck in your quest for employment - depending on the reason you were dismissed, there could be several other companies that should take you.

You better find out what showed up that caused them to dismiss you before you go looking elsewhere. There are many options out there but depending on what the problem is you may need to select only certain companies. Best advice on these boards seems to be.....don't try to hide anything because they will find it. Be up front before you go to orientation to make sure you will get the job. Good Luck!

US Xpress Orientation Facts

Orientation class is 3 full days.
Orientation pay is $47/day (total of $141). This is only paid upon being hired. The first $50 of Orientation pay is advanced on your fuel card once you are hired.
There is a drug test, physical and road test that are required.
Must quit most recent employer before attending orientation.
Things to Bring and Remember:

Class A CDL
Original Social Security card issued by the government – No metal cards, no copies, and they cannot be laminated. Your name on your social security card must read the same as your driver’s license. If it differs it has to be corrected before orientation.
Certified or original birth certificate
If you have had surgery or been under a doctor’s care for anything in the last 5 years, you will need a medical release.
If you have any type of self-employment, unemployment, or jobs that are out of business, you need to fax all of those documents to your recruiter before orientation. Bring the originals to orientation with you. These type of documents would be DD214, tax returns, business license, drug consortium, ICC number, W-2s, pay stubs, safety letters, etc. *Ask your recruiter for further explanation.
1-2 weeks of clothing, bedding, personal hygiene items, and bath towels
Cash for breakfast and dinner for the 3 days of orientation and extra in case of an emergency. *Note: If you are disqualified for any reason from the employment process, you are responsible for your transportation back home.
Voided check for direct deposit
Name, social, and birth date of anyone you need on your health insurance
*Note: Any dependent on insurance that has a different last name from you will require a Xerox copy of the birth certificate or marriage certificate for proof that you must cover them. Also note that if you have a child who is 19 or over you have to have "proof of student status" to put them on your insurance.
You must be in the hotel lobby at 6:30 a.m. the day of class, so they can take you
to class. Class begins promptly at 7:00 a.m.
We have 7 different service centers you can attend. Please see below for your location.
****Hotel rooms are double occupancy. You will be rooming with another driver.****
Service Center Hotel address and phone Transportation from bus station to hotel or bunkhouse

I always make a habit of reviewing these things - especially their MVR requirements. I am more worried about being disqualified from school than having to provide my own transportation - got the money for that + anything else that could come up.

But, again I'm curious as to what they could find that would be disqualifying ... especially if you already have your Class A CDL. I know a lot of schools have various requirements regarding MVR that are usually stricter than what companies allow ... so unless there's something really wrong with a person's background, they should get on. Right?

So what's the yank? Do you expect them to drive you home from the process? How many people fly around the country to interview for jobs- they don't get reimbursed. It's part of the investment in yourself.

Honestly- I read posts about people that are pissed because they can't get miles. Then you read another one about how someone is pissed because they work too much.

I swear these companies can't win.

No Win-Win Deals Anywhere...

Seems like no matter what company you work for, you're "effed" from day one.

I understand completely what you're saying. When I read these threads about companies being trash, i have to take them with a grain of salt. After all, if you were getting good miles, etc. you wouldn't have the time to ##### on a forum. I think that, sometimes, the views we get on here are a little jaded because let's face it: if you're happy at your job, do you really want to get on a blog and rave about it? Not the first thing that comes to my mind.

I think what a lot of this boils down to is people not being prepared, not reading the fine print (or any print in some cases), getting into trouble as a result, and wanting to cry about it. Of course there are cautionary tales ... but most of it is just whining due to personal failure.
