Drivers need to stand up for our own.

I have a question for drivers out there. I'm sure I'm not the first to think of this. Would drivers join an organization, that stands up for the drivers and only the drivers? An organization that will fight for the rights of the drivers not the big trucking company's? Someplace a driver could go to fix or fight false DAC entry's, unfair firings, fair pay policy's. There are over 3 million professional drivers out there, If we could come together under one flag, we could stand up to most if not all of the issues I have read on this forum. I find it incredible that the big company's can get away with the things that they do everyday. Let me know what you think.

It is called OOIDA, with over 160,000. It should be in the millions if drivers cared enough about the industry.

There are very few TL drivers that are smart enough or that care enough about there industry to join an organization that would benefit them.

I was a member once.

The only thing I received from them during the period was:

The monthly magazine.

Solicitation for insurance.

Solicitation for items they can sell me.

The last thing, the renewal for another year of the same.

I'm a new member of OOIDA. Will they look into a problem or help you with your DAC? Will they make a call on your behalf if you are being mistreated by a company? Defends your rights as a driver? If so, why wouldn't more drivers join? If we don't stand up for our self, then we have no right to complain when we are treated wrong. Or am I just to far out in left (or right) field?

You cannot have one organization for all drivers. There are too many differing opinions on issues . Drivers cried for a bill requiring shippers to pass on 100% of the fuel surcharge . A bill is introduced and some drivers start complaining it will be a bad thing . OOIDA is fighting to get the old split sleeper laws back . Fine for teams , but solo drivers say the new rules prevent abuse by dispatchers . I also was once a member of OOIDA but they were no help for me when I needed help . OOIDA also criticizes everyone they need cooperation from - FMCSA , NHTSA , ATA , and others . Drivers need to stand up for themselves by keeping informed of issues and writing their congressmen and responding to FMCSA requests for comments . Research issues to give knowledgeable comments .

I called OOIDA one time. Looking for information on becoming an O/O. All I got was story time about how thing used to be, "back in the day". And why I shouldn't do it. I was looking for facts about being a O/O. How to figure cost and overhead, where to watch out for mistakes. It turned out to be another wasted phone call.

I was writing my previous post when you posted this . OOIDA has brought DAC to court , lost , appealed , been denied , and appealed again . I have seen many posts by drivers saying OOIDA is not interested in helping individuals , only in cases where they can file a class action suit . If your employer is violating your rights you are better off contacting your state labor board or FMCSA . I once called OOIDA for assistance with a carrier and the woman on the phone was condescending and said I should have known better and would know better next time .
