Well I am at CRST our idle percentage is 15% but my DM screams for 10% go figure. She wants us to be the best fleet in the company. As far as cutbacks We have been cut from sit 36 hours before layover/Breakdown to sit 48 to get anything and you sit the first day no matter how long your there for free. When i complained she remarked "Atleast we arent cutting your milage pay 5 cents a mile accross the board." Well the next week she said the manager that is in charge of cutbacks to save money got a letter suggesting to cut hourly employyes getting paid for thier 15 minute break and make them either lose 2 1/2 hours a week or work the extra hours reducing need for part timers to get paid thier full 40 hours a week.

It was put in place shortly after that. She was griping about it one day i said " Well atleast they didn't cut your hourly pay 25% across the board like some company's."

She called me a smart elic. No idea who sent the suggestion in! :-{)> but sure was great.

A/C unit. thing worked, and i bet he was super comfortable (which is all i would care about) but geeeze....his truck looked like something owned by the Clampets from the Beverly Hillbillys.

oh, and i can tell you this. My DM told me last friday that this next week, he was taking his one week off without pay (another cost cutting measure thought up by swift). I went MT yesterday, almost exactly 24 hrs ago. There was a mixup, and the load was to be a live unload, the customer wanted me to drop the trailer, and with the proper okay from the company, i did. I sat for 12 hours, then was told to go to Home Depot for an MT trailer....with no preplan. I didnt want to start my clock to run 14 miles to pick up an MT, but i did thinking they'd get me a load. Now its been 24 hours since i went MT, and i'm still sitting. Had my DM been there, i'd have had a load out of Monroe Township, NJ or something. Good thing there is a nice cigar bar 5 mi down the street.

I do my best to not idle. i would like to think i'm under 10% for idle for the month...but i refuse to not idle when its over 85 and 85% humidity. it wont happen. ill run the truck for 30-40 min with the A/C blowing full blast, then let it sit for 90 min to 2 hours, but how the heck can you get a good nights sleep roasting in the truck, then expect to be safe on the road.

I was in the terminal in Richmond, and there was an ad in the laundry room for a guy looking for a solo or team to drive his 2009 T-2000. Thought about asking about driving it...but i'm sure the pay isnt much better. And besides, it might have a built in fridge, AND he might let me bring my small dog on the truck. =)
Kevin, is that you?

Since you are brand new to trucking they will give you what you need ...experience..I went to them straight out of tech school but I have never made over 650. even with 3300 miles. If money is an issue I dont reccomend staying with them. They have 17,000 trucks someone is going to be sitting. Now they are insuring that their owner Op's that are leasing and getting the miles so company drivers are getting what no one else wants..3day trip of 500 mi...that u can't del until a certain time and no layover pay. I wasnt even making a hundered a week when I turned in my truck. Good Luck to you.

Too many people come into the industry expecting to make tons of money. It's a slow process, and it's also a slow economy right now. If you get into it as a solo driver, I would suggest you simply don't depend on it as a single source of income if you are able to have a working spouse or something of that nature, because it won't support you. You will be spending less than what you are making on average over the course of, say, the first 6 weeks (unless you simply eat like a horse and blow money) but it will likely balance out to about $500 income over your expenses. If you have a loan to pay back, that will be even less.

My advice is don't start as a solo driver. Get used to sleeping in a moving truck. Find a team driver right out of the Academy. There are many many many perfectly content teams at Swift who get as many miles as their truck can handle. They are getting priority right now (not necessarily owner operators). Also, if you can get on a dedicated fleet, that is the place to be at Swift it seems. These typically take time and "knowing people" to get into. Ask for a mentor who is a company driver and on a dedicated fleet already, it is a good way in. This way you don't typically have anything to worry about in terms of idle time and such, as your truck won't be idle very often.

I guess she learned to eat her own words! A driver sitting is eating up the company profits,A truck moving to get load or laoded make more cash.Maybe some day they will figure this out.Instead of looking at the expence costs of run a truck and make cuts.loads make money

While I'm not a Swift driver I'm not far off, Central Ref. service. We too have that idle rule & we DO get charged for fuel if you go over. I'm really good about it 99.9% of the time, but two weeks ago I got left sitting in TX & AZ for days & with my GF with me & had to idle because I just couldn't take the heat.

They just took 40.74 from my check this week... I'm now looking for a new job.

That kind of treatment is just wrong. You can work at your local walmart and make more if they are deducting from your check.
