But then again, you'd probably raise your fuel efficiency in the neighborhood of 10 or 20%...

The owner of Sitton motor lines did a test to see how efficient Tri Pac's were and boy are they efficient. Well Swift is going to do what they are going to do; however, im sure they will introduce them at some point.

They figure the idle percentage based on the amount of hours the truck is driven, so if you have a 525 mile trip, and it takes you say 10.5 hrs to drive that and you leave at say 0800 and arrive at destination at say 2000 and have to show a 10 hr break before unloading the following morning at 0630 Swift policy states you may idle the truck for 3 hrs and be in compliance.

Thats my issue with them,..if its 85 or 90 outside and you get 3 hrs of idle time to be in compliance then they are out of their minds.

For example this week I have kept a log of ALL idle time as the Q Comm will zero out for each new dispatch. I left last Tuesday AM trip was 1345 miles, Greer SC to Greenwood SC to load then final in Brownsville TX, I had exactly 15 MINS of idle time, it was cool and no need to idle at night to rest. However, delivered Thursday afternoon and had to sit for 22 hrs to next dispatch in the 90 degree heat in Brownsville. So I reloaded Friday in McAllen TX at 7 PM and have a trip enroute to Detroit for delivery tomorrow evening, a total of 1685 miles.

I have idled for 19 hrs and 55 mins from Thursday afternoon until right now and I am at 42% idle, it will drop to probably 30% tomorrow as I am not idling tonight as its cool here in KY,..but you see the idea,..no way to get a 10 hr break in on either of these trips and stay under the 20% rule they have set now.

You mean they actually have loads coming out of SC heading WEST?? GASP!! I always go north lol. Those bastages. Next time I leave out of the house, I will refuse a load to PA or IL because I'm tired of running the 65/81/95 shuffle.

Oh they did get me out to TX last time when I had to turn right around and head back home after a month out for a dental appt. I'm firing my DM.

I think 20% idle time is just unreasonble in the summer. Our annual requirement is 40% right now in the Northeast. I can tell you that I was around 4% this week till Thursday and finished the weekout at 18% We don't do restarts in the truck so the Idle time is lower than guys out for the weekend.

If you buy those reflective window shades, a set of curtains and a pair of screens so you can leave your windows open without mosquito's getting in, along with a fan for the bunk and a window fan to blow out the hot air, you would be amazed at how long you can go between getting up and cycling the engine on and off.

I'm not saying it's fair. I think it sucks but I make an effort, especially while the temps are still mild. If you can keep your idle down now maybe they won't look at you as hard when you need to idle for real in the summer.
