Items to bring to school.
-Enough clothes for a week.
-$100 for food a week and $35 more for soap, overcounter meds, etc..
- Plenty of Pencils/Pens, and a notebook
- CDL handbook, should be studied atleast 30 days prior to showing up, the school is a Crash Course! no time to fine tune anything in school.
- A phone/laptop if you have one.
- Sleeping bag, pillow.
Good Luck!Fyr Thanks this. -

- First 3 days is preparing you for the CDL Test. No Driving until you pass this test. If you do not pass you get set back a week.
- Once you pass the test you can now start practicing backing maneuvers pre-trip inspection etc.... for 4 days straight and class time to learn meaneuvers for driving in winter, rain, curves, hills, downgrades etc...
- Once you are signed off on your backing maneuvers you are now going to go for a ride in the truck with a instructor and 3 other students. They have modified trucks which fit all of you in there and there is a seperate console in the back seats to show the students what the actual gauges are reading upfront. This whole week is dedicated to driving the truck, shifting, braking, road signs, traffic checks etc.....
- You will take your road test that friday! If you do not pass it, I believe you can take it again the next morning or following friday. The test I took was the Salt lake City CDL driving course test.
- On average we started about 9:00 a.m and everyone got about an hour to and hour and half of driving. so about 3:00 p.m we would head back to the yard. You take a lunch break at a truckstop. They use a 9 speed transmission shifting pattern, very easy. There are no splitters on the training trucks.
- The practice driving is conducted on frontage roads along the highway, so your in no way gonna hit another vehicle your first time unless you are aiming for it. The Instructors are ShARP! old, cranky and crusty! If you screw up they are there to help!
Ill write more when I get the chance, Im loading up gotta go!
Good Luck wherever you start!Last edited: May 1, 2010
