I work for Werner and am finding out rapidly just how bad a comapny they are. 4.5 months in and I can't wait to find another company to work for. The adage is, I love the driving but hate the company.
Example: It is Thanksgiving tomorrow and I was "Approved for dates requested, but be warned, they are not guaranteed."
I sat in the STL area from Tuesday until noon Wednesday, waiting for a SWAP. The SWAP, setup by my Dispatcher to "Get Me Home." I completed the assignment and logged off to head home. A short time later the Qualcom sends me a message that a loadplanner has naother load for me Wednesday night. I immediately reply NEGATIVE, going home. Sometime later I get the message to justify my refusal of a load. I did and pointed oujt that my time for getting up this morning was 0500 for a SWAP that didn't happen until the driver showed up at 1200.
I go home because I had it approved..
    Simply put, I came home.
I have been having discussions with other Werner drivers and discovering that there is an undercurrent of hatred building for the company from within. I have a friend who is like me, fairly new, yet he is chomping at the bit to get out of this company. Another has reached a point where he is taking a Leave of Absence to decide whether to continue working for Werner. I have many more of these stories, but you get the point.
The continued mismangement and abuse of drivers is becoming a rather large problem for Werner. Anyone wonder why they have a 100% turnover?
Think about it in another term. They have regions setup, yet they run the regional people out of region. Why? By running a driver out of region, they pay that regional cent per mile instead of what the 48 staters get. I see a cost cutting option for Werner at the price of the drivers.
I could go on and on, but you get the gist of the problem. The Werner "Cares" slogan is just so many words. Right now, there is massive dissatisfaction amongst the drivers. The complaints go towards the Dispatchers and Load Planners, but in reality, the problems start at the top and work downward.
I will continue to work for Werner until I too, find another job. I have applications out in multiple venues as I write this. "I love the driving, but hate the company" is a sorry state to be in, however that is where I am today. I remember, I looked forward to working for Werner, that is until the lies accumulated, newer trucks, apu's, etc., now all I see is a company that does not "Care" for its drivers and burns them out without regards to their health and families.

THX Monster. I sent the reply after getting home. Where I was driving was totally not a safe haven to stop. You remember that? So I sent it after I got home. I justified my position, and I documented the fact I'd been up since 0500. Talk about safety. All I can do is see what happens when I go back out Sunday.
    Thanks for the words.

I've tried to warn people about this stuff . Read the financial reports of Werner and the other carriers that keep hiring students . They have parked hundreds of trucks because freight is slow but they keep hiring . They keep hiring because people keep quitting . But finding a new job is very difficult , especially if you give them an excuse to put something negative on your DAC .

I thank you for your responses. I feel that no matter how it goes, Drivers are just another peice of meat. Right now I am applying to local places that will accept my schooling and the time I have in. I am getting nibbles and words from the locals. Now all I have to do is keep a clean nose and wait out my time. Thge largest problem, no APU for the winter and a Dis who lectures me about overuse. Time to remind them that I am a human, I will not freeze my ##### off and right now just get thru the nexzt couple months.

Have you just been driving for 4.5 months in total, or just for Werner? If in total then you might as well buckle up for the 2 full year ride. Because all of the really good companies won't touch you until then. Werner, Swift, TMC, and all of the student hire in companies are pretty much the same. From the time you start school , to the time you retire large trucking companies are full of BS. You mentioned family, There will never be much family time in trucking. No matter how you do it, or who you work for. That is if you are going to make any real money at it. I worked for werner for 3 month myself. Pulled my truck into Springfield, Oh, and never looked back. Thought I would try TMC. Got to Des Moines Heard them climb all over some guy for stepping in the grass infront of headquarters, and I knew right away thei wouldn't speak to me like that. So I got back in my truck and headed back to Kentucky. I came home and thought about it, and desided to go Owner/Op. Not a a choice for the faint of heart.
Everything is on you, and it is not a cheap way to go. And don't listen to all the big money talk you here from some of the old trucker, 75% are just blowing smoke up your a%#. Count the money in Great, Count the money going out even greater! You will always make ends meet. But don't look for the riches if you are still behind the wheel. And your family will always pay for you being out on the road.

It is the simple things. I have a local that needs 6 months of experience and I will stay in our area of the country. Here is the hard part, I want to drive, but I totally dislike the way this company treats its newer drivers and eventually their older drivers. When a trainer tells me he is looking to get away from Werner, all the changes that have taken place in the past year, then he tells me he has been with werner five years, you know that the changes have been for the worse. Mega-companies such as Werner and the others are making their drivers nothing more than pieces of meat. That is how I feel right now and I don't like that feeling.

You have every right to feel that way and I don't blame you for not liking it. Mega companies always have and always will treat most of their drivers like dirt. Not all but most. Both in good times and bad. You said it yourself, 100% turnover rate. There are many reasons for this. None of them good. From the fact that they short you on miles (actual vs paid), no pay for all other on duty time, sitting for days waiting for a load, poor benefits, poor retirement and getting home on a regular basis just to name a few. Do yourself and your family a favor. Try to find a local job that pays by the hour. At least you will know that you are getting paid for all of your time and you get to spend your off duty time with the people that mean the most to you. Good luck.

P.S. If you want to know the companies to avoid, go to the thread that says "Motor Carrier Questions The Inside Scoop". If you can avoid about 95% of those, you will be doing good. It also pays to know that good companies do not have to advertise!
