Once on a team, my codriver (a good professional - boss'es son) and I had our way of swapping wagons, each had his job to do so we were gone in minutes.
One night at the yard with a flat full of toothpicks, he decided to pee instead of lowering the gear...and I pulled out...WHUMP! It slaughtered the landing gears and had to be replaced...along with refilling the asphalt holes.
Still, my bad for not checking, but we'd gotten complacent in our habit.
stupidest thing u have done or seen a rookie do?

Oh!
I know someone who had to swap out seats with their mentor IN the weigh station drive up to the scale because they were checking books and doing inspections. -
Used to dump the trailer off a ramp that lifted both the tractor and trailer to about a 45 degree angle and the wood chips would empty out the back into a hopper. One very nasty rainy night another driver pulled up, brought his paperwork into the dump house, looked at me and went back out to his truck. He proceeded to back his trailer up to the ramp, which was up in the air with my truck on it, and dropped his trailer into the 5' deep pit that was there. Took us about 2 hours in the pouring down rain to get his trailer jacked up and put of there. The driver sat in the cab the whole time, finally got dumped, parked the truck and walked away.

well today i made a pretty good rookie mistake
out in the yard in the jockey truck....went to back under a trailer, was just using my mirror...i hear the plate hit the apron, keep backing slowly and never feel the kingpin grab
well the trailer was up too high so i went right under it, 5th wheel plate was then behind the kingpin and to make it worse the trailer was in a very tight spot so i could barely get to the landing gear crank handle
thankfully a driver from another company saw it happen and helped me get out from underneath it -
My experience as a rookie move was just pure stupidity aka major brain fart... when I first had gone to schooling we were trained in conventionals.. my first two jobs out of scholl were both driving COE's the rookie move I made at BOTH companies was hopping outta the truck like it was a conventional !!!! That is a LONG ways down when your not expecting it...
Second rookie move was at the last company I worked at pulling a stepdeck landall hauling forklifts and other misc. equipment... I went to walk around a piece of equipment on the trailer and wasn't looking well that first step is a doooozy from the top dec to the ground LOL !!!!LoneCowboy Thanks this. -
I never did stay in the truck when it got dumped. Could have if I had the nerve but....... nah!! Always thought it would have been kind of like sitting in a rocket ready to launch.
One guy forgot to shut down the motor before the truck went up. Running when it went up. Not running when it came down . All the oil drained to the back, owch. -
I describe my moments as "the stupiest thing I've every done... this week"

Stupidest thing ive done??? My dad was teaching me how to drive the truck. I let out the clutch too quick and stalled out. I got it down now but it's going to take some time.
