The thing about getting a CDL and work experience is that you are developing a job skill and entering a new career. It is no different than going to college for a year to get a certification for an occupation you may hate in the end. You are not simply getting a job, you are starting a new career. In the year you could be sitting in a classroom learning to be a phlebotomist and getting $12.00 an hour for your trouble after you graduate, you can get a CDL and make upwards of $30,000+ in your first year. I've been down the training road while I was flat broke and looking at foreclosure. 10 years later I own my own truck and I'm looking at future expansion plans. It is going to be rough for the first 3 months, or so until you get your own truck and see some real settlements. Still if you can weather the storm, in the end you will have a career that can pay in the range many 4 year degrees. I have a daughter who is planning on going to college in 4 years. For room, board, tuition, books and other misc. expenses we are looking at over $80,000 for a 4 year degree so that she can be a music teacher, and maybe a performer. On the other side you can spend about $5,000 and make upwards of $100,000+ over the same 4 year period.

CSW1818, I have a question for you. Are you considering Roehl CDL Training School in the first place. I looked at it like this. The schools (there are four in my immediate area) are 4,800 to 6,000 for a three week training. But, I wanted to also drive for Roehl. I wanted to be trained by the place I wanted to work to know what they want from the beginning. If I sent to school elsewhere, I still have to go to Roehl's training for those first 3 weeks. Indeed, I would have gotten a $600 sign on bonus with Roehl, then the $90 per day with the trainer. But, it would have put me 3 weeks or more behind in starting to make my own wages.

So, in a nutshell, I am being trained by one of the best companies, their way, for 2,800, plus 185. I pay my way to their school, pay for my meals (I can be creative and healthy), I must remain employed with them for over 1million miles, but I need the experience anyway. Roehl gets a great, hard-working, representative behind one of their trucks, and I get the experience I need to be better at what I want to do. I think its very reasonable and benefits all around. Now, I may not even make out it of training, so . . . it may be a much to do about nothing on my part.

The $25 with the trainer in my paperwork does not say it's a sign-on bonus. But, I think one can live on $25 a day. I do for less right now. I

Good luck, CSW1818. Hope to see you in class. I still have not heard back from the school, I have made numerous calls and even emailed, so I need more clarification. There must be a lot of bodies coming through.

From the post above, I must remain employed with them for over 1million miles, but I need the experience.

It's not 1 million miles I think it's 1 year or 120,000 miles or something like that. Someone will be along here shortly to let us know.

Oh, thank goodness. Only 120,000 miles. I must of misheard. I was having trouble wrapping my head around that one.

They send you a fuel stop with your routing and you go to the stop the computer gives you.

So, it's basically based on what fuel stop they get the best fuel price?

Yeah it looks at your route, your fuel level and prices and tries to optimize your stops. If you are low on fuel but going somewhere that has cheaper fuel down the road, you might get 2 fuel stops, 1 to put on just a little to get you to the next stop where the price is cheaper.

    Ford L8000 Thanks this.

I've heard a lot of drivers complain through the years about the opti-stop, but it is based on Co-Pilot's routing and I found it to usually be the most efficient route. On the occasions when the system did something bizarre a call to the fuel & routing desk usually fixed the problem. Dispatch was almost never any help. Their reply was usually, "Follow the route sent out." When they still sent fuel stops out to the owner/operators I found most of the time it was the cheapest and best stop as well.
