I don't qualify I was just referred by the VA. But I will look into it the other school has a lot of different financing options as i'm sure the tech does too. What I need to do is more research between the two. That's one of the reasons for my initial post, not only to do my own but to gain knowledge from others in my area. I'm glass you responded I may have rushed into it and not looked everywhere. One thing i'm looking at is TCE can get me in quickly and I could be out sooner" which may or may not be best".

I would agree with MNDriver on this. The CDL school I attended is Heavy Metal Truck Training in Inver Grove. Frankly it's about 15 minutes from my house. Interstate Truck Driving School in South Saint Paul is about 25 minutes from my house. The weekend program at Heavy Metal was about $1,500 less than the program at Interstate. I paid cash so less money is good.

Any effort at all and I think you'll end up with the CDL no matter where you go. I think the College programs give you more knowledge about the industry, rules and regs, etc.

There are 7 Somalies in my class and I don't think it's costing them a dime. Their on some sort of Obama welfare. They also seem to be putting that much effort into knowing the material-ZERO. I would think as a Veteran you would be able to find some financial program at the school that would work for you. You've served us, now I hope we can serve you.

A vet here and a disabled one at that. I just finished an 8 week course 16 credit hrs at a community college. Most of the people in my class (over 50%) are there on grants and what ever else so it is not costing them a penny. And a couple of them are on food stamps.
I was layed of Dec 2011 and as I was informed I found out I had lung cancer. Had that fixed in January and started school in March. I was not eligable for unemployment until my Dr's release me for full work. I also made to much $ last year to qualify for student aid, loans or grants. We vets like the thanks but beat up the gov't.
here is our great gov't. when I was in the marines we were finger printed, back ground checked and registered with the FBI...yeah it was in the early 80's. Then I get a passport and have to have all that again. These past 2 weeks I got my $129.00 twic card. yesterday went to DMV and gave them $83.00 for my Hazmat back ground check. They also use TSA but you still have to pay them. Va Hospitals also have no way of sharing info. If you go to a differnet location plan on a day or 2 to get to see a dr while you get registered. Yes we have a GREAT gov't and wonder why we owe so much money. Glad I dodn't run my life that way.
Sorry...just had to vent and it is not a party thing.....let's just fire them all and make sure you make less than 100k to work in DC so you know how WE live

Being VERY new myself. I just got my CDL Tuesday. I want as much training as I can get. My school was 8 weeks from 7am to 3 pm monday to friday. Yes we did get out early some days. I am 99.9% sure I am going with Roehl because I can not find many bad things about them like I can with all the companies willing to try a newbee. I am sure these companies have very high insurance rates and that is why the pay is lower. Not always that they are bottom feeders like you see. You can not pay the newbee like you pay the seasoned person. I pre-hired with to many companies and it was getting hard until I tried Roehl...now I think I have the company....and your thoughts?

I am going to step out of character a bit and go "Crusty ole timer"....

And freestyle, this isn't just directed at you. But to a lot of the "newbs".

Get off the "training, hold my hand while I learn this job" kick.

You are driving a chunk of steel and rubber down the road that can do a lot of damage REALLY quick before you know what's happening.

Once you get that piece of plastic, you have stepped into a new world. Off that training course is the real stuff. It isn't a game out here. It's what it is. You have a split second to make that decision. Not a chance to second guess yourself, right wrong or indifferent.

Time to learn to read a map is over. You should have learned that long before you even got your license. The only difference now is, you have to make sure you stay on truck route. At least Rand McNally highlights then in the atlas for you.

There is only so much a school can teach you. This is a beef with the education industry, not with the student. As a student senate member last year, I saw how the administration saw students. They were a commodity for increasing revenue. Bigger is better.

We had a presentation on WHY it was so important to change the name from a technical college to a Technical and Community College. It has to do with community "image". "Vocational" and "technical" are taboo words to communities. 20 some years ago, I graduated from Alexandra Vocational Technical Institute. I was the "last" graduating class there. The next year it became a "technical college". Twenty some years later, it's now a "technical and community college" Each change at a new generation. Soon the "technical" will be gone.

When I asked the president's office the hard question of "what's wrong with teaching a technical trade?" They responded by ending the presentation right then.

The president's office had been caught in their lies.

Truck driving is an On-The- Job type of trade. You don't learn it in the classroom.

You either have it, or you don't. You are NOT going to learn this in a book.

    You never stop learning either.

So don't come to a company to think they can put you into a school and teach you to be a truck driver. They can't.

You had best be ready to make a decision and do it NOW. You don't need a college degree to do this either. You just have to make a decision and stick to it.

Be prepared to take criticism as well as give it. But be like water on a ducks back and just let it roll off and learn from it. I don't care if you have 40 days or 40 years experience. They day you stop learning, get out of the field.

But folks NEED to get past this mentality that someone will always be there to "teach you" how to do this job. It doesn't happen.

You just need to step up and do it. Alone for the most part. But know that there will always be someone around watching even from a distance to always help you.

Mn thanks I did n't mean to sound like a leach. I have many and I mean many years in a 4 wheeler reading a map long before GPS and that many years on a bike when you planned your route...placed it in the head and hit the road. Riding a bike can be fun with cages that do not have an idea we are around.
When I say training I did not mean how to read a map, how to get from point a to point b, I mean pulling into the term and seeing who I need to to get my but out and back on the road. Thanks for your input and one day we will hook up....I am no 53 year old kid. I have done my days on the 4 wheeler road with 25+ years on the highway seeing all kinds of crap. Not trying to say what I think you read.....sorry

    Freestyle,

Not sure if it even came out the way i meant. Lot of newbs seem to have the "baby me through this."or. And thats wrong.

You need to be able to step up to the plate and make the decision and go with it.

No school in the world can teach that.
