    After getting my CDL locally, finished Phase 1 Orientation in Texas, officially hired Feb 18, 2013 (dry van), did 11 days OTR Phase 2 tested out in Ellenwood, then 7 weeks Phase 3 solo before joining TX Regional for following 6 months; then switched to 7/7 Home Time in Oct which placed me to the National Fleet;

    invited to Trainer training and completed it first week in Dec at Gary; still based out of Grand Prairie, first Trainee didn't show due to illness; have now finished 3 Trainees, all of whom did really well; am now in my 4th truck, a Condo, obviously, (2014 FL Cascadia with 104K on it);

    overall, am pleased with being a Roehl driver altho, admittedly, there have been times of extreme frustration, nevertheless, the current arrangement is meeting my objectives and, apparently, Roehl's as well. So far, besides Grand Prairie, have spent time at Marshfield, Appleton, Gary, Ellenwood and the yards in Houston, Pontoon Beach, Ben Salem and Jacksonville. I don't post here often, but do check in regularly to see what you other "Railies" are doing. All the the best to all y'all out there!

    Congratulations! There's a huge percentage of first year failures. With one year otr many doors are now open to you. Keep your eyes and ears open.

    Would it really be trucking, if there weren't times of extreme frustration?

    Yep and not only that has trained 3 already.

    Not to take anything away from your making a year in the seat because that's something to commend when so many fail and/or never see that mark......however.....you're STILL a rookie. And don't know how much so. With right at 3 years in now, I'M still a rookie, albeit one who has 350,000 miles in and a couple of safe driving awards for no accident/incidents and zero service failures and fully 50% of those miles north of DC.....but I wasn't so quick to publicly pat myself on the back at a year lol Difference in companies and quality of trainers/drivers I guess but mine is just NOW letting me train.

    Congrats on the year because it is something to be proud of but another year in the seat and you'll look back at how silly you just sounded saying you 'aren't' a rookie anymore. By year three you'll realize how little you knew at year 2.......and so on.

    But don't worry sooner or later your truck ( maybe with the help of a student) will properly humble you lol it does almost all of us.

    As I understand it, the term "Rookie" is generally understood to mean the first year in about any field of endeavor. Nevertheless, I totally agree that there is a whole lot more to learn and did not intend to sound boastful. Sorry it came across that way.

    Yeah you gotta love the technology but it really sucks sometimes for conveying intent lol

    as as long as you've been on the site you already know this is a rough crowd I'm actually surprised more didn't chime in at seeing the title.

    You would be correct about the one year designation in most professions. But this isn't most professions. It's one of the few where any lack of attention to detail, complacency or inattention will kill you or even worse, others. We as a group I think demand much more time to shake that probee status.

    Its all in good fun even as much as it is in seriousness. As much as dinomite and I have butted heads on some things this is one we agree on. I think we probably agree on more than he or I would like to admit lol

    But it I can't imagine training at one year or less. That's just insane. I couldn't do it in good conscience. My company requires 3 years but asked me at 2 due to my performance record. I said no. Didn't feel I was ready even though they did. When they came back 8 months later and asked again I said yes. I feel much better qualified to impart knowledge and have been in enough situations and winters now that at least I feel I can train to a level that I actually am providing good training. At a year or less, no matter how skilled you are in the truck, you aren't ready. You just haven't been there done that enough yet. There is so much more to being a trainer than just training the driving part and a lot of driving situations you have to be driving more than a year to see. I felt my learning curve year 2 was just as steep as the first just on a more refined and 2nd year level. And so it goes as well into year 3.

    Just as as an aside I've been flying for over 20 years and have advanced licenses but still learn something almost every time I strap into an aircraft. This is no different.

    I think you'll do well though. You have the confidence part down and that gets a bunch early on.

    Dont take the intent of my posts to be demeaning or talking down to you. You've hung in there a year that's the toughest one. We're just having a little fun with you at your expense although the lack of seat time to be training is, I feel, a huge problem in this industry across the board.

    And dont forget when you post something that this this is a hard room to play lol sometimes the audience will eat you alive

    ATX, Bayle and Dinomite Thank this.

    CONGRATS, I just got to my one year last month. There were some scarey moments with this last winter being so bad and most of my nights were spent running at about 35mph lol i wouldnt trade it for nothing

    I love driving and i cant wait to get another year on my belt.
    Be proud but humble just remember, to stay safe out there and enjoy the many years ahead

    Dinomite and ATX Thank this.

    Congrats! I bet that feels pretty good, now! I have a question for you: how is the pay at Roehl? I'm looking into going flatbed, OTR. Just wondering if you knew anything about the pay there, more specifically for flatbed.

    Thanks!
