Lmao, why would you not use a GPS? Maybe yur dedicated or local. Assuming your at Roehl writing on these threads, my GPS gives me so much information so fast...LMAO, compass, eta, distance remaining.

Do u use a cell phone yet? Hard to find a pay phone these days.

People against having a GPS or technology just continue to amaze me. Yes the GPS isn't perfect every time - but is a paper map perfect every time? - NO! These drivers who want to drive using 1975 technology and just have a cb and stop at a pay phone (good luck finding a pay phone btw) to get directions are so funny they crack me up when I read their posts like "Oh no please don't give me a GPS! NO NO NO! I'll just use my cb and map and stop at a pay phone if i need to call somebody!" lol Why make the job harder than it has to be? Why?

Go ahead and call somebody and ask for directions. Do you know what they will tell you? They will say, "It's at 634 Wilson Street - put it in your GPS and we will see you at 2 o' clock. Thankyou." That's what they are gonna tell you when you call and ask for directions.

Written directions come from either the customer, or drivers who have been to the facility and include information not available on any GPS. I have sent in corrections and information such as tight turns where you can only make it if you slide your tandems all the way forward, or what entrance to use. A GPS can't tell you how to best approach a customer to have the docks on your sight side instead of the blind side. Believe it or not the routing Roehl sends out is usually the most efficient route. One of the best things I have found about a GPS is that when you are looking for a particular street, or turn it will warn audibly you ahead of time so that you can keep your concentration on the road and surrounding traffic.

No, you're absolutely correct PreacherMan, a GPS will not show you which side of the building to approach the docks from. But a satellite view on Google Maps will show you the building, the best approach and which streets to use in conjunction with your Trucker GPS. The problem isn't the technology, it's the fact that many just don't know how to use it to their advantage, or that many are afraid of using the technology! I use a Rand McNally 720 in addition to my iPhone, a laptop, my Atlas and the directions provided by Fuel and Routing. Add them all together, take the best information and run with it.

There are several bugs that need to be addressed in the Co-Pilot GPS system that we are seeing deployed on our Qualcomm and Driver Tech Units! I will continue to use my method along side of the Co-Pilot until I feel that they have improved, both the system and the Planners with some of their ridiculous and obscure routes!

The bottom line is this; Don't be afraid, or too proud to use the technology to your advantage! It's all there to aid you in doing your job with as few headaches as possible.

There has been many a time that I have sent a macro 2 only to get the reply, "No directions found." In those cases Google Earth has been a life saver. To me technology is a tool to allow me to work more efficiently. I am not a Luddite, it's just I think technology should be the servant of man and not the other way around. Give me a map and a compass, drop me into the middle of a wilderness and I will find my way home, give me a jeep and a GPS and I can get there quicker.

Sorry to hijack, do a search in TTR for a 'two-stick Mack', and see how granpaw drove a truck! Watching this guy hook his left arm through the wheel to shift sticks with BOTH hands was wild! I don't think anyone minds that 'new' technology! (I'd love to learn to do that!)
