I am new to the trucking industry. I am scheduled to be in orientation on Monday in Gary In. My question is in regards to the pre work screening to see if drivers can handle the physical activities. I guess I am a little nervous because I am a big and tall guy. I watched the video demonstrating the various tests. I can do the squats and the climbing activities. I can't however do the test where you squat and go under the trailer, because of my height, I seem to hit my head. I can go to a knee and get under the trailer with no issues. Are these tests a matter of doing them exactly as they show? Is it do all of them or fail and they send you home? Thanks in advance for your help.

gmore442...I am not a trainer...but I took the Pre-work screen last week after completing the CDL school. We were allowed one hand to balance on the ground. We were NOT allowed to balance by touching the truck. Being tall, you may have to lean a little forward to complete it....but I do not think it will be a major issue. Good luck!! I should note...I am only 5'9".....but I still think you can do it.

Thanks for the info DaWoogie! Would you mind sharing more about the pre-work screen? What did they have you do? How long did you have to do it? What were they looking for? Stuff like that. Did anyone in your class have any issues? If so, were they sent home? Thanks again.

No there were no issues in our class. There was only one flat bed driver. He had to do a bit more than the rest of us. But essentially it's this. 1. Squat under truck...first for a few seconds reading a scripted pre-trip on te brakes...then had to hold position for twenty seconds. 2. Step, step, kneel kneel up on trailer. 3. 10 squats touching the floor each time. 4 . 30 lb bag above head walk forward 10 feet, then backward 10 feet 5. weighted basket lift 3x... 6. Horizontal pull 3x frontwards and backwards. Flatbed drivers also had to walk the beam for balance, carry the tarp approx 50 ft and back, go up a ladder and touch the ceiling, and finally they had a weight machine..they had to due pull downs across the body. After each exercise the nurse took your heart rate....I'm 48 years old....my heart rate never went above 100.....I was allowed 155 bpm. So....take your time, relax, and do it. There will be no problem.

That info is very helpful. Last question... was the step step, kneel kneel done on a flatbed or box trailer? And were there any handle/rail that you could use? Thanks so much for the info!!!

I took it in Marshfield. It was a flatbed with one handle. They ask you to maintain three points of contact during the procedure. You will end up on one knee on the trailer, then reverse to get down.

View attachment 74102 Question: is this too much stuff to bring to training? The duffel bag is 30 in. Long by 15 in height and width

A military size duffle bag, a small gym bag sized and a brief case is what I recommend. Any more than that and it gets crowded in the truck with your trainer.

    neff18 Thanks this.
