OMFG, a fellow short-bus denizen!!! -
Texas says that drivers on the freeway have no obligation to yield to merging traffic. I say that's wrong and dangerous, because all the examples stated in this thread. The UK poster is right: our acceleration ramps are ridiculously short, sometimes dangerously so.
As a bus driver, when it comes to merging, especially along US75 in McKinney, where there's alot of construction going on, I find it dangerous because when someone refuses to let me on (usually cowboys in lifted pickups who think everyone should get out of their way--truckers almost always either slow or change lanes to let me in) because my only escape route is into the temp Jersey barriers.
I was taught to driver courteously: if someone needs on, let 'em in; if someone needs to make a lane change and signals for it, let 'em in. If more drivers were reasonably courteous, we all would benefit.Trish in SC Thanks this. -
Just a thought, what happens when two people are each trying to yield to the other?
Answer, two drivers slowing, braking, and nearly colliding.
Want to be safe, maintain speed, watch merging traffic, and look for an out if it becomes needed. Give other drivers the ability to Expect the Expected.Lux Prometheus, Nightwind8830 and Beedubyah Thank this. -
If I drop down to 6.5 mpg over that same 3000 miles, I will use a little over 461.5 gallons. That is 36 extra gallons at $4 a gallon which comes to $144.
At 2900 miles it is about $130, at 2800 miles it is about $122 etc...
If you are asking how it actually costs me that much it is because as an owner Operator, I pay for my own fuel, maint, insurance etc.... -
That's getting bad when your company tells u that u have to yield to traffic when the yield sign is meant for them.Sure at every exit ill look to see if any cars are coming then slow down if I see cars entering. But no way would I be forced to have to kiss the 4wheelers backside.Sounds like Roehl is going to take the heat even if its the 4wheelers fault in they hit you,you drivers will be charged. Then stop at the green lite, slow down and proceed with caution.Id be having a talk with safety and tell them to come out here and show me how its done.

Here's another good idea, but not well thought out. This morning I get a message telling me to shut down immediately because Madison is under a tornado warning. The problem is that it was sent by safety over the qcomm. Since we can't read messages while we are driving I didn't get the message until I was at Janesville and pulled into the rest area. It's a good idea to send out warnings, but someone needs to come up with a way to get the message to drivers while they are in motion.
Of course the high crosswind, rain blowing in sheets across the road and black skies were pretty good indicators that I needed to be very careful. I've actually slept through 3 tornadoes that struck within a 1/4 mile of where I was at and I've been through a couple of hurricanes. We actually watched a tornado form as it flew over our house. What I'm saying is that I don't take storms lightly, but I don't go into a panic either.Beedubyah and jeepnut_nh Thank this.
