Thanks for the great advice. In school and trying to figure out where to go after I get my CDL. I was looking at Schneider OTR Bulk, Roehl 14/7 or 7/4-7/3, and Maverick Glass division. As a noob, I don't mind the micro management and hand holding until I figure it all out and get comfortable. Which of the 3 would be the best training/orientation for someone in my position?

14/7 and 7/4-7/3 is part time. 7 days off either in one week or divided out is still a week off. I did the 7/4-7/3 when I needed the time to deal with some personal things way back when I first started Roehl. I wasn't able to stay on the 7/4-7/3 for long as the pay check took a big hit. Each company you have mentioned is a good place to start as a newcomer to get experience. If you can do Roehl with 11/3 that would be your best schedule. More time in the seat to get that needed experience. All three will send you out with a trainer.

    evanstonmark Thanks this.

Thanks for getting back to me. I am really leaning towards Roehl, I have read a lot of good things about them from newbies. Was concerned about the mileage. Lots of conflicting reports on that. Some say they get 2500-3000/wk others say they are lucky to hit 2000-2200/wk.

If I were to choose the part time gigs at Roehl, it would be for personal reasons. Family and to take care of things around the house until everyone (myself included) get used to me being on the road. That being said Texas Phoenix.... Do they let you jump around from the different home-time plus gigs to full-time? Or is there a waiting period to change to full time or to switch divisions etc. And lastly, is it like Schneider, where you can pick how many days u are driving or is it pretty much set in stone (like if you are 11/3, it will be 11/3 no matter what)? Eventually I would like to spend several weeks at a time on the road.

    Thanks!

Can't say for sure where the miles are right now. The longer you stay out the more miles you will rack up. If the wheels aren't turning you aren't making any pay. 7 days out limits your miles as they have to get you back to home port. There is another driver waiting for his 7 days with the truck. You cannot jump between the time fleets. You sign up for 7/7 you will remain in that time fleet unless you decide to go to 11/3. 11/3 is solo truck, OTR, nationwide, no sharing a truck. The only bad thing that I found when first driving and being on the 7/7 was that my skills were not sharpening up as fast. Almost like the 7 off was a vacation and the next 7 days driving I had to learn all over again. If you go out on the nationwide fleet you have to put in at least 11 days. You can decide to stay out longer and just earn another day off if you stay out 18 (4 days off). You will find that there is nothing set in stone in this industry on getting home for hometime. Want to be home on a specific day then you give yourself a window of at least 2 days. Want to be home for Johnny's game on Friday. Then ask to be home on Thursday but don't be surprised if you don't get home till Sat. Getting home all depends on freight. If you want dependable hometime then get your year of experience then find a local job. Oh and also the 7/7 fleet will be looked at by another company as part-time driving if and when you decide to leave Roehl. Drive the 7/7 for a year it will be looked at as only 6 months of experience. I found that out when I was on the 7/7 and I immediately went to the 11/3 nationwide and put 2 years (counted as 1.5 years) in with Roehl before I had to leave due to family reasons. First starting out, 11 days while learning can be exhausting. You will build endurance over time that will allow you to stay out for 2+ weeks at at time. Eventually you will find the right time frame out. Three weeks is about my limit before I'm fried from dealing with traffic and shipper/receivers and need a few days to chill.

Texas Phoenix, I've got a pre hire from Roehl, will be graduating school 2/16. They offered me a out 5 and home 1 1/2 on a regional flatbed. Do you think they would hold true to that the best they could? I live 6 miles from I- 65 on Ky/ Tn line. Thanks.

From what I've heard from other regional drivers, they are pretty good at getting you home on the weekends for a 34 reset. Can't comment on mileage for that particular fleet.

Sorry have no idea what flatbed side is offering. Didn't have a 5/1.5 when I was a company driver.
