I hope I can make this long story short. Obamas shutdown a couple years ago and the cut of military contracts cost me a great job. While on unemployment (not a dime released in the two years, but claim approved, go figure) I was encouraged to go to school for nursing or driving and since I've wanted to drive since I was 12, no time like the present, right? Please note; That was 6 months ago.
So unemployment told me to apply for WIA (workforce Improvement Act) and they would pay for the classes for a community college. After a lot of cold calls to drivers that were not thrilled about answering bs questions (and yes, I agreed they were BS) and recruiters that were not happy but answered anyway, I completed the paperwork required.
I went to the community college workplus recommended to fill out the required paperwork (pending approval of the WIA funds) and the instructor said that the faster I get the permit, the quicker I can get to the behind the wheel time and encouraged me to start applying for the Hazmat, TWIC etc ahead of time so that I had everything all together once I completed school. (His estimate was roughly 4-6 weeks from application to graduation).
I studied for and passed for the CDL-A Permit, (with all endorsements; double/triple, tank, Hazmat, TSA Precheck (was suppose to be TWIC but the lady hit the wrong button. At least I can fly with a little less hassle now) and I called the Workplus program every week to ask about progress of approval...... every week was told the same thing, "You have not been entered into the system yet, call back again next week".
3 weeks ago I received a letter denying the funding of the school because I have a college degree and was "marketable" in my chosen field so they were not going to sponsor me "changing careers".
Well, there is No money in my field and with no help paying cost of classes I was stuck with a permit and no where that would loan me use of a truck to practice with. I'm pretty sure that there isn't a company worth its salt that would let me drive with very little behind the wheel time and I would NOT blame them one bit.:biggrin_25513:
Hence, how I have everything and nothing at the same time...... But I did get positive news today from Roehl about the classes there in WI. So here is hoping :)
