Well, if you had got that message from Roehl last week, you already know that OptiStop routing and avoiding Tolls is a "new" keep your MPG campaign.
I do not know what DSR's think of it, but I already got a call telling me I am 11 miles out of route.

New rules are : stay off Chicago Skyway *
Take I 94 to downtown instead of 294*
Do not take toll roads unless in your Optistop or you have to listen to your DSR giving you a half hour propaganda, do twice get a warning.

If you are going to go off the designated route, DSR will be alerted and no doubt will have to kick your ###. I do not mind MPG games, since I always keep up above 7.0 But I did take any routes I wanted if they are logically safer, less crowded and get me on with almost same mileage.

I understand the concept of saving pennies to accumulate millions, but I think that running toll roads is needed at times

Roehl owns the truck,Roehl pays for the fuel, Roehl insures the truck and load. So since when is it a crime for a company to dictate the way and means it is used. If a driver don't like the rules QUIT. We all have a job because Roehl has been finacially smart in the past.

as a business model, your logic is sound. However, once they point out, as they like to do, that the *driver* is the one responsible for the safe transport of freight, forcing a driver (via disciplinary actions for non-compliance) to take a load through downtown Chicago on a Friday afternoon is incredibly short-sighted. Especially considering we're a newbie-hiring carrier.

    Chicago Drivers are nuts.

Now, I dislike losing the ability to modify my route according to the whims of Chicago Traffic Reports. too often it's been a two-hour drive from the circle to I-80.

Now, in full disclosure, I generally end up eating Chicago three times a week, so it probably disproportionately affects me more than many other of our Roehl drivers here.

As Roehl pays by the mile and not by the hour your argument loses traction.

No your argunent loses traction because it is company owned and if payed by the hour or by the mile you are going to be deligated the route they want to pay for and how long it should take, If not you will have that guy payed by the hour driving the minimun speed limit of 45mph because he is payed by the hour and not in a hurry or the guy who wants to drive 75 miles out of route because he wants to drive the loop around the city instead of going staight through downtown.

I used to go thru downtown the majority of the time. This is before I-pass and had to stop and pay cash at every toll booth on 294. It is about 30 miles shorter and unless it was rush hour it was faster because I didn't have to stop at all the toll booths. I would also take students down there to work on shifting. Even with a few slow downs it was still faster to go downtown. Once Roehl got I-pass than it was usually faster to take 294. Roehl also told us to go that way because it was safer. From what I gather if traffic is going to be an issue you can take an alternate route. Then let your FM know and he can make a note in the system. I am willing to bet this change is going to cause lower MPG and a rise in accidents. I miss the days when drivers could think for themselves a little.

Taking 294 does not add anywhere near 75 miles to the route. Plus the fuel used is about the same you are not in stop and go traffic.

I just mapquest-ed the two routes from Oak Creek, WI to Gary, IN.

    Using 94 through Chicago - 113 Mi.

    Using 294 around Chicago - 124 Mi.

I'm not confident about reading the toll difference, though, but I think that 294 adds about $16.
