After first of the year I am looking to switch from my current carrier to either Landstar or Schneider choice. I need information about the income I can expect and if I will increase my income enough to make the switch. My current compensation is mileage based at $.82 a mile deadhead and a sliding scale of $.91 down to $.85. The longer the run the less the pay. Fuel surcharge is $.01 for every $.06 over $1.25 a gallon on loaded miles. It is cut to 80% on deadhead miles. I was getting their price for fuel which has been changed to a flat discount of $.055 a gallon to $.08. In short my mileage compensation has gone from $1.33 a dispatched mile down to about $1.28-$1.29. It is time for this business I started a year ago to start looking at improving its’ profit margins.

I generally understand the choice program. You select loads off an internet load board. The truck gets 65% of whatever rate is posted for that load. As I understand it, there is then a fuel surcharge added to the rate paid to the truck for that load. It is up to the driver to break down the total that will be paid to the truck by mileage (deadhead and loaded.) I understand this will vary by load and so the replies I get in this thread will vary and that is fine. What I am looking for is an idea of what I could expect in the choice program and how drivers like it.

P.S. Here you go Etch, convince me to choose Schneider over where I am now or Landstar. Also, go ahead and convince me that saying good-bye to the Blue Lemon is the right thing to do. Remember, I've grown rather attached to her.

Well even Schneider's legacy program (mileage) is bettr cpm than what you mentioned so i would hope if you do choice you could manage even better. as far as Landstar my Aunt did drive for them and left because the rates dropped so low and the broker's play favorites and hold the better paying loads for their driver's. I am a Schneider driver and know the o/o's i speak with say their happy. I hope you find what your looking for. Good Luck

Etch went to Schneider from Roehl which is where I am now and he's happy. I sent him a pm as well as starting this thread to gather information. He's been trying to get me to switch for over a year. Wtih the stunt they just pulled on the fuel "rebate" it's time to make a change.

well from a current Schneider driver and i've been here over 7 years i think they're a decent company. The good thing is if you run and pick up and deliver on time they usually keep you moving. there's always slow downs but thats industry wide. Hope to welcome you to the Pumpkin Patch soon.

i have been leased to both landstar and sni under the choice. ls almost broke me. if you go there you need to pull a flat or there is no money. you have to call the agent for your loads and hagle over the rate. landstar was great at one time but they have developed some problems the last few years at least on their van side.

sni system is different. when you log on to the load board the rate you see is your rate, to the truck with fsc and sni' cut already taken out. (LS board shows the gross so if you just look at the boards at first glance theirs seems better) if you like the load you click the assign load button and its yours, info is sent to your quailcom. i LOVE this system. sni doesn bug me, in fact unless i have a problem or question i will go weeks without talking to anyone at sni.

you are in a good place for loads, best paying area we have is il,in,mi,wi. i could run around up there all month for $1.80 -$2/mi loads. (dont expect 1500mi loads, sni will generally be shorter loads. 300-600) i live in tx which is not a great area. i average about $1.50/mi just running between s.e. texas and oklahoma twice a week. i can make more money heading up to your area but the loads i haul are as close to dedicated as we will get and it gets me home at least part of every day of the week even if tuesday and friday are only till 10am then i spend those two nights in the truck. almost no idle time and great home time. after 20yrs trucking its a trade off i am happy to make

The $1.50 a mile you make, is that with or without fsc? Frankly I don't mind staying closer to home. I've found two ways to make money, stack up a bunch of short stuff and stay running or a few longer runs. It really wouldn't break my heart to get home more often since I have an eleven year old daughter, (can we say tweener melodrama?) There are areas that I will run if I can select individual runs, but since I'm under "take it or leave it" dispatch I have to wipe out the entire Northeast from Virginia north just to avoid I-95 north of NYC. When I want to stretch my legs I like going out and back from the midwest to either the south or southeast. It would be nice to vary between staying in the midwest and some longer stuff. One thing that works well is to go into Wisconsin, Minnesota or Nebraska and get a load heading south. Then from there work back north. The key with systems like the choice program is to look at the total including fsc and how long you'll be under the load. I understand that miles still matter, but not like they do with mileage based pay. When I was with Curry we were paid on percentage system, so we didn't look at the mileage. We looked at what the load paid and how many loads we could get in a day. ADM lime sucked, but cities were good money.

Basically I'm trying to make two decisions. Landstar or Schneider is the first question. The second question is if I can't get financing for the Blue Lemon and have to turn her in, how long will it take to recover the lost money Roehl will soak me for?

recovering any lost money is a question only you can answer because only you know how much money it is and how hard you will need to work to make it up. At schneider you can contact their finance dept and see about getting a truck thru them. Landstar doesn't offer you that option also schneider has a huge freight base so finding freight may be easier which then translates into more money earned. Choose wisely Preacher Man

thats with fsc. our fsc changes every week based on the doe average that week and you get 100%.

landstar or sni you dont get paid deadhead. sni pays detention but you uave tp wait 6 hr.before it starts. ls also pays it but ls takes theire 35% percent of it.

sni would definatly be your best bet if you want to stay closer to home. LS you will be running all over. sni has a large customer base that makes.it easy to stay in one area.

i only book drop and hook load 95% of.the time. the one thing about sni.is the loads with live unload appointment have way too much time on them. by doing drop and hooks and i can push them together as tight as i want.

the one thing you cant do is chase the highest rate. that high rate most the time will get you somewhere you cant get out of without loosing money. like the east coast. i.can show you plenty of east coast loads coming back for $.80/mi. i wont do it unless i can get at least $2.50 going in

you also have to factor in saving. my last co i was paying $750/mo for insurance. here.its better insurance and.i am paying like $300.

if you fuel at pilot of the J you get good discounts. they change every few weeks but right now its like 14 or 16 cent per gallon off pump price. if you fuel at a yard the price is guaranteed to be the cheapest in the state that day. the other trucj stops vary but its around 5 cents.

they have health and dental insurance you can buy

im a smal company guy, i was scarred to come here but i really like it. theyre good people and treat us good. most the.people in the offices you have to deal with used to be truck drivers which helps a ton. sni is a privatly owned company so they can do things to make the company good for the.long term where as publicly help companies are more concerned with show profit every quarter for the share holders.

i like it here, wouldnt bs ya if i didnt. im not like that. actually most tje time all i do is complain. lol.

if you pm me your name and number i can turn it in and have them call you to answer more questions. yes i would get paid for refering you, no thats not why i recomed them. but i could always use some extra cash

Im not much on switching jobs I hate change so I am nervous about job changing but it really looks like a great deal for the most part thanks for any help thanks
