Carry a number 9 crowbar to pry your buttcheeks off the seat when you get there (because slick conditions will cause a rear-end clenching suction you wouldn't believe:biggrin_2556: when you are new to trucking)! LOL! Just take it easy, slow down, and try not to travel with the pack. Most bad weather truck accidents I have seen were caused by someone in the pack messing up and sharing their crisis with at least one other truck! Maintain the safest following distance you can, try not to make unneccessary lane changes, do not use the jake brake, and don't do anything suddenly (like hard braking or quick steering maneuvers). Think slow and easy. Take rest breaks to beat the fatigue that the stress caused by driving in adverse weather will cause. You'll be fine, driver! And after a while of dealing with the adverse conditions, you'll realize it isn't as bad as your mind is making it. Don't get me wrong- a lot of people who have been driving a long time still get uptight when the weather is bad! Good luck with your trip! Stay safe out there.

Lucked out today not much heavy rain made it to SC safetly. I do everthing you mentioned except for breaks not a lot of time when your running late by driving these back wood country roads for the first time. Yes I stay away from the pack and not make to many lane changes but that can bite you in the ### to. Had a lady on an on ramp made me test out kmmy abs works fine lol. Also had that little red triangle go off on me. Being safe on a windy road going to GP in Virginia a 25 mile an hour turn bit me in the ###. Thanks for your post LT.

that red triangle on the qualcomm alerts you to a critical control event. Either a hard brake or stability control. touch the exclamation point. That will take you to that tab that shows the notifications. There you can see what the event was. If that happens again, make a mental note of what occurred. You'll need to report it to your DBL. Either before he/she asks or after.

More than 3 hard brakes in a 30 day time period nets you a Commitment To Excellence contract.

Hang in there and take it slow, it gets easier. I know I really stressed about the weather and so forth when starting out, I'm sure everyone does. But its not the end of the world if you pull over and end up late. Hell they might be happier to see you in a couple days when things calm down anyway.

I'm not sure what backroads Navigo has you going down, but that thing doesn't care about the weather or how many stoplights and little towns there are, it just calculates miles. One thing I learned last winter is I can just say screw that, I'm staying on the interstates where I know roads are plowed and there's plenty of truckstops. Its your option, and if you tell your DBL you feel safer going 50 miles more on that main route vs taking your chances with their route, they will usually be understanding and fix your route with route points so that you dont get dinged for out of route miles. Especially in bad weather, I'd rather take the safer and easier way. And they won't mind, just say the word "safer" when you explain why you want to stay on I30 or whatever it is.

Yeah, I know it does bite... But if they want the load to get there safely, then they will have to be patient. Happy you made it safe!

Great advice here. I might add one thing. Our job is to get freight to a customer safely and on time. You cant accomplish the latter in a ditch. Every customer in the world has had a load delivered late because of bad weather. Please dont be scared to pull over if it gets bad.
