Common sense and chemical plants , oil and water come to mind.....

Have you ever seen what happens to one of those $10 face shields mounted on a hard hat when a good amount of liquid is propelled at it under pressure ?

I have, I was the next truck waiting to unload ....... Blew hat and shield off his head. The poor guy turned and ran.... Got his face and whole side of head(ear).

He ended up at the hospital in the burn unit...... He's ok today years later.....

Point is shields and helmets should have chin straps to hold them on... And the side and back of your head are unprotected.... As you turn and run! (The natural reaction )

To the students...... Never take ppe lightly, it only takes one time....rant over!:(:(

I have thought about that a few times as I was balancing a hardhat on top of a tanker trying to keep it from falling off my head. It causes more balance issues than it would help if I actually fell off. If these companies really cared about safety there would be real fall protection racks at terminals and tank washes for us to use. Chemical plants won't let you on top of tankers on there property but we are required every day to climb up there and check without fall protection. Its still more about CYA than anything else. I will believe Schneiders "commitment to safety" when I see a fall protection rack go up at it's Keasby terminal.

Just last week I picked up a trailer after freezing rain left 1/4-1/2 inch of ice on everything. I had to beat it off the glad hands connections to hook up the lines. Fortunately it was an empty dedicated fiberglass tank we top load that gets sealed at the customer after unloading so I did not have to climb up on top of it. A regular tank would have required hammering off ice from the cat walks before you could get on them. It took me almost 10 minutes just to do the steps on my tractor it was so thick.

That said use the PPE they give you when a product calls for it. Always check twice to make sure there is no pressure on a tank before opening or disconnecting anything. Don't try to fix leaks on top while a tank is pressured up. Common sense.

I agree that most safety is common sense, but you do realize that common sense isn't really all that common, right?

Most of the chemicals we worked with would either ignite or release even worse chemicals when reacting with/contacting moisture. We had acid suits in addition to the hard hat/face shield/goggle combo we were required to wear.

I agree that some PPE seems to cause more problems than it solves - can't count the number of times I banged my hard hat off of stuff I would have completely missed if I wasn't wearing it. But I never had a problem keeping it on - maybe the style you have is different than what we had?

I will admit I can be anal about safety. I like having all my parts in working order!

I appreciate your discussion as I am learning from it and some of what to expect from a tanker driver's job. I just finished driver's school, am 61 years old and in very good health. I tend to be detail oriented and would rather do a job right or very well as to go for speed so I think tanks might be a good fit for me. Would be challenging too so to keep my interest. I came to this forum to learn the details as much as I can and I thank you for clueing me in.

I know nothing from experience about tankers but I am surprised as wsyrob indicated that there is little or nothing for fall protection on the top. Falls are a problem from tankers as I have read. Seems to me a problem that could be significantly impacted but maybe it would cost far more than I imagine. I am totally new to this so i can't say.

Absolutely wear all of it when hauling the nasty stuff.

Schneider is currently running recruiting ads on XM radio that say: "Unlike other tank carriers 75% of our loads are not hazardous". If you are hauling something that won't hurt you gearing up can make you less safe on top of the tank..

My guess is they don't want to let the driver make a decision and have a hard and fast rule for everything to CYA.

Too bad schneider doesnt hire tanker applicants out of the job area. They want you to relocate and acquire a state dl first then apply. They cant even guarantee the job even if you promise to relocate.

Yup it sucks. They turned me down for an otr tanker spot in ohio just because my home add is here florida. I could have moved up there anytime too because i have relatives in the area. Oh well, i guess things happen for a reason.
