I'm new to this site and just a student so I'm also new to the entire trucking way of life/world. I look forward to all of the information that will be provided in this thread. I do plan to drive for Schneider and to lease from them as well. I chose them because they have a hub close to where I live and that along with a regional job will allow me to be there for my kids as often as possible. I only mention this because of the problems that someone seems to have with them but it is the best fit fore straight out of school. Possibly. LOL. Anyway let's stick to the rules of the OP and learn or share information with each other. Thanks.

How is it calculated? Is this another thing they figure out and take right out of the paycheck, or is that part also left up to you?

They do it for you and deduct but it's based off of fuel consumption vs miles driven in a state etc . I will ill cover it all later , but is paid by the SNI and deducted

Ohio is very good both in and out. Steady freight with decent rates.
Texas isn't bad if you never want to leave Texas. There's lots of folks making good money and thru the house throughout the week. On the other hand, Texas would get old after a while for me.......I like running all over. Only problem with Texas is getting out. Rates are pretty stinky on the outbound side, but generally pretty good on the inbound side (a lot like Florida).
Tennessee, neither good or bad. The have freight, but depending on where you live, mountains as well.

If I had my choice, I'd be in Ohio in a heartbeat.

What kind of trailers will you potentially be hauling in the IC Choice Program? Dry Van, flatbed, tankers, etc.

I've heard of spec'ing a truck for the type of hauling you might take on. Being that you might be hauling light to heavy and different types of trailers throughout 48 States (different terrain), what type of truck would one recommend for this program? (Makes/Models)

If you sign up to this program, is there a certain amount of time you have to stay on with them? If so, what is the minimum amount of time you can sign up for?

If you own your own truck, can you haul a load for someone else or are you 'owned' by Schneider? What if the load boards become meager or pay very little, can you haul for someone else in this case?

Thank you for educating a 'Rook'.

ORIENTATION 101 : What you can Expect

THIS WILL COVER ALLOT OF THINGS FOR DRIVERS BRINGING YOUR OWN TRUCK AND ALSO LEASE GUYS

I did my orientation at GB Wisconsin and stayed at the SETTLE INN . The rooms are decent and the Mcdonalds right next door was my second home
The hotel provided breakfast as Im sure others have noted and it was a decent breakfast also. The Schneider LIMO Picks you up daily (The big orange bus ) and takes you back to the hotel daily. The SNI Training center provided lunch for us daily also. I was only out my Dinner but like I said I lived at MCD . Others go across the street to the Bar and Grill there is also a TONY ROMAS right across the street. A gas station located down the street about a block or so if you want candy , chips , etc.. There is also a small grocery store in the plaza adjacent to the hotel not sure the name.

FOR CONTRACTORS TAKING OWN TRUCK TO GREEN BAY ( SETTLE IN )

It is important to note that you take your truck into the hotel and park it bob tailed at the hotel parking lot. You will then leave out monday morning and take your truck to the SNI Training academy . DO NOT FOLLOW YOUR GPS... as it will take you into the car entrance. follow these directions from the hotel ROAD HOTEL IS ON ... TO GLORY ROAD (make left) To SPIRIT WAY (right ) the truck entrance is down on the LEFT... Enter and go around to the shop ( 2 bay shop) you will see all the LEASE TRUCKS there. Park either in a empty slot by the lease trucks or diectly across from the shop in a empty trailer slot . NOTE WHERE YOU PARK (as you will be asked where your truck is located in reference to the shop. BRING A EXTRA KEY, as they will need to take your truck to MASTER FLEET to get it inspected and decaled up and install your QUALCOMM UNIT. If there are any issues with your truck you will be presented an invoice (estimate) to get work done to complete or pass DOT INSPECTION . You must pay the bill and agree to the charges and approve them to do the work prior to it being done. MASTER FLEET is the vendor doing the work not SNI so the payment will need to be paid to them and not SNI. There is NO CHARGE for QC install or DOT INSPECTION. If you have a certain place that you want the QC unit installed there is a notes section on the paper they give you to tell them your truck location. I put down the notes and also went out to the shop during a class break and showed one of the SNI staff where I wanted this. The shop at the SNI Training Academy is actually a SHOWROOM for SCHNEIDER FINANCE where they show the trucks to the SNF guys who are leasing trucks. its not actually a full functioning shop although it is staffed with 2 MASTER FLEET employees who do small repairs such as a light etc. Hence why the trucks goes down the street to MASTER FLEET SHOP to get inspection done etc.

BE SURE YOU HAVE A EXTRA KEY..... If not you better have her unloaded into your room as far as cloths etc, because it will be at least Tuesday if not Wednesday before you see your truck back on the SNI Yard.

    KING PIN LOCK

Dont bother bringing your ROADKING KING PIN LOCK not accepted. If you do not have the ENFORCER your buying one from SNI for $60.00 not a big deal but there were guys in my class who had the Road King and they dont accept them no matter what your recruiter told you.

    ATBS

They will want you to take this as a business tool and use it for 6 months free then the fee is $75.00 a month there after. Personally I did not opt for it but I can see its advantages if a person did want to use the service. If you dont want it you dont fill out the form and no questions asked . They show a brief video on this product and the benefits to it.

    PRE PASS / EZ PASS

You will get your device with your permit book along with a PREPASS book this book has a Sheet that needs to be filled out if you want the PRE PASS SERVICE . You will also need to send a copy of the CAB CARD . The SNI price is $13.27 a month but the unit comes ready for tolls at no charge for authorized tolls . No monthly unless you want the PREPASS SERVICE.

    PERMIT BOOKS

They keep them in good order but most likely you will have a update to put into it to get it up to snuff , no big deal.

You will also have a book test, of 49 questions if you look up all the answers it will take about 2-2.5 hours ; and the grade is actually recorded not a in class fix it type thing. You will also have some other courses in which are graded but they are computer based but simple to do, they are HAZMAT and HOS then the 49 questions in the book.
