Love flatbeds but have small kids so getting home more sounds good but have heard conflicting reports. Just looking some real information. Thanks ahead of time.

I can speak a little about dollar general from the two loads I did for them at Werner.

Make sure you like physical labor because it's not as easy as they make it sound. They stack those trailers to the roof with loose packages, some quite heavy. You have to load those packages on some stupid flimsy carts that like to tip over and like to roll away while you're trying to push them. Those upright shopping carts they fill up and close up with fish nets are about as useless as any container I've ever pushed. Think a shopping cart with a wonky wheel, loaded heavy, being pushed off the back end of a truck. The nets also get stuck together and you'll be fighting to tear the cart away from the side of it's fellow cart. You also have to return loaded carts full of cardboard and the people who load those carts don't give an f how they load those carts. You'll have carts with cardboard hanging all over the place and you have to figure out how to put it back on the truck. One advantage you have is that you've done flatbed work, so strapping those idiotic mt carts back in place shouldn't be a problem for you. The first time I did it, the carts came loose in the back and were sliding all over the place. You'll do multiple stops and some of the places suck. There is a reason that the demand for Dollar General account drivers is always through the roof.

I bowed out after two deliveries and the driver manager made me come in and face him and tell him to his face that it was too much work for me to handle. Then I got forty seven more offers (exaggerating a little), then I got a call from hq quizzing me as to why I hated ALL DOLLAR GENERAL DEDICATED. After he thoroughly quizzed me, they never asked me again.

This is just my experience and I'm sure results will vary. Not trying to be negative, just honest about MY experience. It may be different at Schneider but I doubt it since you don't work with Schneider you work with Dollar General Distribution Centers. Then again, since I've only worked out of a DC in the south, results may be different still. Just thought I'd offer the opening salvo on response since DG really made a strong negative impression on me from my experience. Maybe it will work for you, especially being a flatbed driver and I've always thought that flatbed driving looked like hard work and something I wouldn't want to do.

Peace, and good luck in whatever you choose.

Any Dollar store outfit is just retarded to deliver to. Not worth the time, effort, pay or the stress. If company's would stop delivering to them maybe there would be some sanity put into those loads. But until then.. Stay away unless you want to hold a gun to your own head.

I notice that a majority of dollar generals are on second rate two lane roads, with a skinny driveway that usually has about a 8% grade to it, and dont you dare miss it because the next turn around is 20 miles up the road.

You could be in the flattest part of iowa or kansas and that is how the driveway will be.

Do any of them have docks? Any of them?

NO ! This is HILARIOUS so far! More! More!

It all reminds me of the Dollar General in town - access - no dock - stupid metal carts with broken wheels - cardboard - the whole lot.

What city in California? Lots of good jobs where you can be home more, especially since you now have 12 months experience.

    Blue Line Food Service
    Gardner Trucking
    Northern Refrigerated Transportation
    UPS Freight
    Old Dominion
    Reddaway
    Cardinal Logistics

    Probably a dozen more.
