Hello all-I will be starting oreintation with Schneider National at the Charlotte location on 30 Dec 2014. They said that I have the option of OTR or Regional, but I will have to let them know at oreintation. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on that subject and if there is anything I should bring that is not on the packing list (Motor carriers atlas, GPs etc.) I thank you for your responses in advance, and have a good evening.

water jug to fill up with orange koolaid. now you may be able to go home for a few days after orientation, you can ask, cause i brought everthing with me and didnt need it. make sure you bring all your documents, license, s.s card, passport etc. once you are set up with a t.e, he will call you and tell you what to bring in the truck, if not ask.

otr, regional, thats your choice. of course you get more hometime with regional. wanna see the country? otr

Thank you for the advice. The only worry I have is that the person telling me where to go and what to do may not remember my drill dates-I am in the National Guard. They assured me that it would not be a problem, but so did my current employer. When I was last deployed, I had to get JAG on them due to they're actions towards me before my mount up. Have a good evening, and I appreciate the information greatly!

They'll give you an atlas after training, and the truck will have a GPS on the qualcomm. I'd save my money on that stuff, but some guys prefer to have their own GPS I guess. OTR vs regional is mostly about choosing more consistent home time vs longer loads and probably a bit more $. They probably like 48 OTR guys a bit better, but I've only done western 11 so can't speak for your area. It kicks in when you're halfway across the country, or most of the way, and suddenly need to be home in 10 days for whatever. Its a bit of a crapshoot to get back on the right day, like if you need to be there on a friday to pick up your kid or something. You can switch from regional to OTR or vice versa anytime later, you aren't locked in for life. IMO it'd be better to start out regional then see how you feel once the newbie process is over. There'll be days when you just want to go home, but it gets way easier in a few months.

Roger that-I believe that is the way I will go. There is a dedicated account here in Statesville NC that the recruiter mentioned, but I have talked to some people that work there and they say they are very slow and they have laid off alot of people recently. I certainly do want to stay busy. The only days I need to get back are my drill days, ol' Jody took care of the wife while I was deployed, so now he is having to keep her up-lol!

The only real difference as explained to me by a DBL in Atlanta is the more frequent home time with regional, they don't typically have a lot of 48 state freight for solos anyway per my DBL. This is my second go around and I chose regional again which by their definition is anything east of I-35 basically.

Gotcha- I don't even know where I-35 is, I guess I have alot of learning to do. The only Interstates I know of is I-85, I-77, and I-40. My hometown is the crossing of I-77 and I-40. I just hope that oreintation goes smoothly and that I don't make too many mistakes. It sounds like regional would be good for me, hopefully I can get a job where I get to unload stuff so that I can get some pt in. My biggest worry is eating right- eating all of the wrong stuff and not moving around alot could be a disaster. Thank you all again for the information.
