I was in a truck stop talking to a trucker about things, then money came up as it tends to. I told him that I take home around 3500.00 a month(after taxes no kids) and his face dropped. I said that must mean you make more? He then went into the fact that he does IC for Schneider and that he leases a brand new truck every three years. Doing this he makes 160k a year! My turn for the jaw drop! I think this number is net to him but pre tax. I said I wasn't interested in being gone three weeks at a time. He then told me of a friend of his doing the same but regional runs only. He also said his friend is home every other day, and makes 120k(again I assume pre tax).
So the question is, was this a big fish story? If I can make 10k a month leasing a new truck I'm in no question(well lots of questions)! Heck if I can make 8k I'm in. I have an entrepreneurial mind, I have not been driving a year but also have a business on the side. Working for others is not my thing. This is my first job in ten years! If I can increase my cash flow doing two businesses instead of one and a job I want to.
Please no leasing is a trap flame stories! I'm after people doing this now, and what kind of money they pull down. Also does the regional thing work(i'm in Iowa city), so close to lots of large cities.
I need IC input!!

He is relating his gross pay (pay to the truck, before taxes) not his net. If he's leasing a new truck every 3 years his net would be probably in the 55-65k range before taxes. After taxes, who knows as everyone's tax circumstance is different. Good luck, Jim

I make that working a job.... Why would I do IC?
moosc Thanks this. -
If you get in with a decent company that has a fair lease program and you're able to run consistently, you can easily make 8k a month after all expenses to the truck and pre-income taxes.

2 or three more questions, and you'll have the answer to how you make more than you do as a company driver, without leasing the equipment.Stormdriven and Inland-Pilot Thank this. -
Income depends on what hard you run also and where you run.
You can run ALL Northeast and do over 100k a year after expenses before taxes if you aren't lazy.
As a company OTR driver life sucks and you bust your butt to earn $50k -
There is NO WAY he is making that amount NET. Gross yes but not net he would have to do over 3k net every week which would put his weekly gross about 6500 or so EVERY WEEK. Maybe once in awhile but not 52 weeks every year. Did he give you his contact info and say use him as a referral? If so he's just trying to recruit and that answers your question.
