I've been offered a position running Intermodal out of French Camp.
I hear a lot of bad things about Stockton and the crime rate and living out of there which worries me, but am willing to make it work. Is Stockton as bad as they make it out to be? Are there some other areas (apartments) within a 15 minute or so commute of the OC?
What areas do the local Intermodal drivers out of French Camp run? Do you go to the hustle bustle parts of the Bay Area a lot? Do you spend a lot of time in Downtown San Fran/Oakland?
How long is your typical day and what is it like? Where do you usually run? How many loads do you usually get a day? Do you get stuck in traffic a lot?
I've been to the French Camp OC before. It seemed really relaxed, lots of room to work with and fairly chill. What's the vibe there like?
Any other info?
Thanks for any help.

Stockton is worse than you think. Just google "stockton shooting" and enjoy
ramblingman and Disgruntledriver Thank this. -
I've tried many a' times but supposedly the Intermodal operation here in Phoenix is a Phantom Operation. I've had many people, recruiters, trainers, even drivers say it doesn't exist, yet it does, there are daycabs here running containers around. I'm guessing it's like 3 guys and they're all high up in the illuminati or something. -
I would look into moving up to Roseville area or someplace like that. will be a longer commute but so much nicer

An hour and 15 commute... Yikes. I don't think I could do that.
Still curious what the average day is like for a local intermodal driver out of French Camp. -
You are better off living in Manteca or Tracy and commuting to Stockton. You could also look at Lodi. Stay the hell away from Stockton for the love of all that is good and proper in this world. Unless you are looking at starting a methamphetamine habit , then it's a lovely place.
Tracy isn't bad. A 30 minute drive west puts you in the Bay Area and you can hop a BaRT train into SF -
What sucks is that ALL the apartment places in Stockton have bad reviews. Even the nicest, newest, most expensive place claims to have dog bite victims, drug dealers, robberies, etc. I don't get it. I was looking at the area around "8 mile road" and I-5. It looks so nice, new, clean. There's one apartment place there with horrible reviews. All the other places have horror stories as well and then you look at some of the demographic around said areas and it's terrifying. I almost think I'd rather live in Compton or Long Beach.
Tracy doesn't seem much better and I don't see any decent areas there. I agree, it has better proximity to more stuff, but it's more expensive and there seems to be nothing decent there. -
Stockton is probably the cheapest urban area to live in the entire state. Naturally it's going to attract a much broader type of resident than most places.

So where would be the safest place to live within however-far of French Camp be? Again, it seems all the apartments in Tracy are pretty ghetto and low rated themselves and there are just a few of them there at that. I don't really have the money right now to get into a rental house or this would probably be a lot easier. I was looking at Modesto but it seems kind of on the sketchy side as well. What about the very south side of Sacremento? Although I REALLY don't want a one hour commute. Maybe I should just consider another intermodal location that's hiring. Chicago? Seattle? Or maybe I need to find one of these illuminati drivers in Phoenix and somehow befriend them with lots of Vodka and tickets to sporting events or something.
