O/Os: I want to hear from you about...
What I'm going to have to offer to attract some good, professional O/Os in Texas to haul company-owned 53v freight. No lease to pull my trailers, etc. The model is pulling sealed trailers, door-to-door, to and from Laredo, TX and those trailers are then crossed sealed to be hauled by the Mexican carrier and by my company on the US side. There is some trans-loading out of laredo to various US destination too but I can take that only as needed.
I'm about to start a Small Carrier ... Shooting for 2-3 O/Os in the first month or two & grow from there. Would be Local Regional Texas with some other lanes pushing out to AL, MS, MO, OK. Small sample of lanes I have are:
Laredo --> Dallas area
Laredo --> South Eastern OK
Laredo --> Alabama
Laredo --> Mississippi
Laredo --> Houston area
Laredo --> San Antonio
San Antonio --> Laredo, Dallas, Houston
Dallas area --> Laredo
Houston area --> Laredo
I have longer haul opportunities as well but wanted to focus on the regional biz up to 1000 miles out to get started.
I'm estimating about 2200-2400 miles per week once things get rolling smoothly after the first month. The business isn't 'new' it's already moving but my company will move right into what we can handle from day one.
My background (if you didn't read about me in the welcome board) is that I've worked for two nation-wide carriers: one in bulk (liquid & dry) and a van carrier in a variety of positions: pricing, costing, payroll, admin, sales, management, etc. I have great contacts that have asked me to start something in Texas to help out with their freight needs.
I am looking for some professional O/Os who don't want a dispatcher lording over them, are willing to share their thoughts as we grow the company, are self-starters, to summarize; aren't just plain old steering wheel holders.
What I need help with is the following:
Do O/Os prefer % or CPM pay?
What is the going CPM & % pay looking like out there? What I really want to know (because it seems there are many hidden strings on every advertisement looking for O/Os), is what is a fair base-line, no frills CPM / % ?
What are O/Os not getting offered that they would like to see when signing on?
What is offered that isn't really important to O/Os that's being offered?
A good place to start looking for O/Os. With all the #### carriers constantly advertising everywhere, how do I get through to some really good drivers? What have you seen that works or caught your eye with recruiting ?
Are O/Os leery of working for a start-up? If so, what will I have to do to make the hard sell to get some quality drivers to sign on?
I'm open to any and all suggestions
Thanks!
Also, I'll be in Dallas next week Thursday --> Sat if you know anyone who might be looking !
Thanks in advance!
