I will soon have my class A. Are there owner operators that hire new driver's? I have companies like USA who are saying come work for us, We'll pay you back your cost for school. Well that sounds foolish, Like they want me to drive for nothing to pay them back for school I already payed for! Since most companies want a minimum 3 years OTR experience before they hire, Will that be my only option?:biggrin_25513:

Message to new Class A drivers, I have found that companies that will pay for your training USE YOU TO MOVE THEIR FREIGHT AND PAY YOU NEXT TO NOTHING.
The reason the big companies want three years experience is :
    1) Insurance costs
    2) They are self insured, the bean counters figured the chance of getting into an accident is less.

    Hot Rod Lincoln,
Your other options are find an O/O who willing to take a chance with you, or a small trucking company.

I'm an O/O that is willing to hire new drivers, under certain conditions, my pay scale is generous also ( for the right employee).

Exactly which company requires 3yrs? Most I see are 1yr or 18 months. Getting into the game it sucks but sometimes you have got to just pay your dues and be done with it.

Its gonna be a stretch to find someone willing to take a chance, nothing against you but if you had money tied up in trucks would you want a new guy with no experience ?? I couldn't imagine the insurance alone..

Like someone said you might better latch on with a big company just to get some seat time then move on....Another thing you may want to consider is things like bennies, 401k, paid vacation etc. bigger outfits generally have a better overall package when it comes to that stuff..

    good luck..

First, you can find Company jobs that pay slightly better with 6-months OTR and once you hit a year it doesn't look as bad. But what many that just get their CDL don't understand. You are still learning and want to work with a company that is geared towards working with you. Part of the cheaper pay is because insurance. The other part is that you will be less productive and require more hand holding that someone with a year of all season experience. Not school is going to teach you the way the road will teach you. All you have now is the legal right to drive a big truck. The real learning comes in the next couple of years.
Insurance - I have trained a guy to get his CDL for the farm. Just checked about insurance rates so that he could drive my truck in a pinch during harvest. My current carrier won't take him. Best I could do would be $4k per year more than I am paying with very limited coverage.

go to craiglist.com, i saw swift O/O looking for team. im not sure where do you live? sometimes small companies do hire newbies per demand. they might not put you on insurance right away. everthing is possible in this world.

working for big company is not bad, you get less money but you gain experience which is true wealth for driver. you can do 3-6 months then find a better paying job.

there is also some companies that hire newbies and pays decent money. it all depends on where you live and what do you prefer to haul?

anyway good luck with your job.

    jerryy123 Thanks this.

for what it's worth, i would recommend prime as your first job. since you have already completed school at your own expense, you would be guaranteed $600/wk during training, which consists of usually a lease driver lets you drive team with him for a total of 60k truck miles. it usually takes 3 months to complete that training before you can get into your own truck. the equipment is top notch...newer trailers with airmax for the tires and all their trucks are 0-3 years old. i used them as a stepping stone just for that purpose and 3 weeks after training got a dedicated acct with another company that gets me home 48hrs after 6 days.
