I agree a company ID, especially one with your pic on it should be sufficient. I have made some very rude comments, however I still have to show my DL. I didn't so much worry about someone stealing my identity as my credit is pretty bad. Then last summer I found out someone actually got a Capitol One Credit Card in my name with my DL#. Big fight, lots of headaches to try to keep from paying $1000 in someone else's bill.

if the issue is identity due to the patriot act or what ever else came out at 9/11 then maybe the Feds should consider issuing a federal CDL. They make up half the rules anyway.

I have done business with several of our customers that make a photo copy of my DL and attach to their paperwork upon leaving the shipper. I am worried now. Not that "MY" identity would ever do anybody any good anyway. LOL.

what i do is just make up some bogus number and write it down.
i have been to one or two places that want to make a copy of it, but i dont have my SS# on my lic so i dont care.

Most large retailers are certified through the Feds in an anti-terrorist program called C-TPAT. The Feds make the rules - failure to comply with them means that the company is dropped from the program. The Feds do inspect to ensure that the policies are being followed. I drive during the week and work the gate for a Best Buy DC weekends - we check drivers licenses but do not copy any info. Apparently each company is free to run the program as they wish. Just FYI we have caught at least one illegal alien driving a big truck - I think that is what the Feds are really worried about. The Department of Homeland Security has a link - just search for C-TPAT and you'll find it.

well i can tell you why some shippers and recievers do so. at GAF they have had guys trying to pick up flatbed loads that had NO drivers license,they were stopped,the truck was impounded,and so was the load. of course these were our "border brothers" driving some old wreck with their numbers on the side written with a crayon. it was funny when the Fontana P.D. commercial division showed up one day i was loading and three drivers abandoned their trucks and ran off into the weeds.as for recievers,if you damage something while on their property or cause a ruckus they can report you directly to law enforcement without having to call the trucking co.all these type of things have contributed to these kind of rules.do i like it,no-will i give my information,yes but i also get the name of the person taking my info and inform them that if i become a victim of identity theft,i will be giving his/her name to the police. i've had guys say "ok,never mind" after i told them that!

This is what I do. Or, I scribble so it is illegible. I am tempted to get a fake ID just for this purpose. My real# is safe and the shipper/receiver is satisfied and knows no better. I bet this is 1000000% illegal though.

Just picked up a landstar brokered load last month. It was loaded on MY flatbed, pulled by my truck. The load was heading to Calexico, CA and would be transported south of the boarder on my trlr, as I waited in the good old USA.

Got to the Landstar drop yard, checked the trlr in with an equipment inspection sheet used primarilly for their trlrs. Dropped the trlr, waited on site for 36 hrs, checking in every couple of hours for progress reports.

Finally the trlr was returned. I hooked up to it, ran through the inspection sheet with the same worker that checked it in. Then he says he needs a signature and my drivers license number, as there is a block for it on the check out sheet.

Needless to say I sign it, but refuse to give my DL#, as This guy barely speaks english, and I am sure my number would be stolen and used by one of our "boarder brothers".
He says he can't release the trlr to me without it, Landstar policy. I inform him that it is not Landstars truck, Landstars trlr, and I am not employed by or leased to Landstar, and they have no say in the matter.

He says he will close the gate and call the police. Big mistake. That is unlawful detainment/ kidnapping, and informed the man I would run his gate down, and wait for the law outside the gate, to give my statement for his kidnapping trial. Last thing Pedro there wants is law crawling around the drop yard.

Bluff called, checkmate, whatever you want to call it. I waited outside the gate for the law, went inside to ask if they had called, said I was looking forward to the chat with the officer. He (Pedro) promptly and rudley said I was free to go, and asked me to leave the property.

I asked my company (Heartland Express) about their policy regarding me showing my DL to shippers. I was told that if I know that the shipper I'm going to is going to require my DL I have the right to refuse the load if I want to. I was also told that they encourage me that if all I need to do is give the number to have a fake one handy I can write down.
