I haven't been too worried about detention time, as I usually don't have much. The last 3-weeks, I've had over 45+ hours...& now I find we only get paid "what the company can collect" from the customers? Really?? I asked for permission to do my own collections, but you know THAT won't fly. Ideas anyone?

This will be a deal-breaker. I'm about ready to retire/work part-time anyway. I don't need this abuse if the companies aren't going to stand up. Yeah, I know....if we complain, someone else will haul the load.:biggrin_2554:

    Let someone else haul it......lol

I always say "I can go broke at home, and it'll take longer."

Seriously , all you can do is steer clear of the pia customers that have a lot of waiting time. And don't want to pay.....

And this thread falls in the category of another thread titled turnover.Just another one of a million plus reasons why the high turnover rate.Customers don't pay the same in detention but you can bet companies pay their drivers a certain amount.Like say the customer starts detention after 2 hrs of sitting and pays $25.00 an hr.Cariers won't tell their drivers that and keep that extra money.I think Martin does detention like that.In your case, your company could care less how long you sit and won't try to get the customer to pick up the pace. They have better things to do then come to the aid of their drivers.

I made about $250 on detention pay between two different deliveries in the first week of January. When I get told to sit and wait, I smile and fill out the paperwork. It doesn't really happen often, though. My company handles it well when it does, which is why I think it doesn't happen much.

(Soorry a bit off topic at first just pointing out you can't let shipper/receiver walk on you)

not to long ago I was held 26 hrs on a load they went though and unfolded the tarps since they wanted their guys hooked up to the safety equipment that's all well and goo I have 8 foot drop lumber tarps wet though and was rolling and setting a couple bungees on each side to be able to move one guy came out crying a can't fix my tarps where I was AS I was getting in the truck to pull out I looked at him said listen here I waited 26 hrs for you all to get this ready you can wait 2 min for me to temp secure the tarps so don't ruin them by catching in my tires. I then told him one more word to me and you can take the load right back off. The ladies in the office after I was all secure and getting my paper work said something about I was early I said
1 I was told to be here yesterday before 3.
    2. I WILL not ruin equipment because you made me go get the tarps put on where you needed other trucks to be
3 I don't have to deal with stupidity (perk of being o/o) If you wanted the other truck though there first all you had to do was ask I was doing what I was last told to do by your people pull in a let us unfold your tarps all I was doing was putting a couple bungees on so the tarps did not drag.
4 I am over this situation and dropping it since I am trapped and getting ready to leave but one more try at making me look like the ##### and the load will come off the truck one way or another you taking it or me dumping it.
Then I called dispatch and told them what happened he said ok and don't worry about it I said I am not worried just informing you.

next time I went to pick up load was ready I was in and out we chatted and laughed a bit but no rushing and no complaining.

Anyways detention should always be gotten its your time not like you can go relax and have a beer and time is money. You don't have to put up with it and complaining don't always mean someone else gets the next load. sometime you just have to stand up for what's right. I find a company that won't back me when I am right I will drop them like a hot potato. don't take it laying down and good luck

Ya cause it cost the company absolutely nothing for their equipment to be tied up at a dock instead of out earning revenue. The employee driver with no capital invested is entitled to 100 percent of detention charges.

From my experience, unless it directly effects the company nothing will happen, you could sit till the next ice age.
I work for a small outfit and fortunately my dispatcher goes through the roof if her truck is held up.
She hits the brokers up for detention and usually gets it.

Just curios here, what would be fair driver compensation in your opinion?

In my opinion after first two hours which are free, the driver should be compensated as if he was driving , say 20 $ an hour, owner operator 50$, capped to maximum of 200 for the driver and 700 for the owner maximum per day.
