I picked this up from my dad. He drives truck in Europe and will actually hand out a sixpack of beer to the loader guys at some of the big warehouses. Usually bumps him upto the number 1 spot and he's in and out in no time.

Years ago I have done close to the same thing.. while delivering in Toronto, I would stop at the duty free store and pick up a carton of cigarettes. When I got to the receiver, I would open the doors and throw the carton on top of the load, then back in. Sometimes I wouldn't have time to get back to the dock before my trailer was half unloaded. We never discussed the "extra" freight, but I was always the fastest unloaded at the receiver!

Also, I have found that if you do get a shipper/receiver having a bad day try apologizing, tell him/her that you will be ready when they are and ask if there is somewhere you can get a coffee... then ask him/her if they would like one. This sometimes takes them off guard and they will appreciate the simple gesture.

Good idea, but I dont consider it apologizing, it's simply being courtious and most people do appreciate that. You're right, it sometimes does catch them off guard.

This technique works all over. I sometimes put a few cheap cold sodas on my trash can for the trash guys...I'm the only guy on my street who can put ANYTHING on the curb and they'll take it!

most of my adult life (before i got a cdl and started driving) was spent in shipping and receiving. the only drivers that ever got attitude from me were the ones that gave it to me first. that experience has served me well as a driver. i get along very well with most shipping and receiving clerks.

Well said. It's all in the delivery.
Learn how to tell those that have it coming to go to hell in such a way they look forward to the trip.
Get into a pissing match with some and you will wind up on the losing end.

Attitude is everything when you go into one of these places, be it a shipper or receiver. I always go in an say good morning, or how ya doing. Then usually end up bs-ing for a few minutes. Im usually not in a hurry, if I got a tight pu time next or another delivery, I just go with it. If im late im late, no sense in getting all worked up or getting in a pissing match with someone trying to get unloaded faster. I always try to be nice, but if someone comes off with a piss poor attitude right when I talk to them I just hand em the paperwork with a smile dont say anything else. Then back er into the hole an let em do there work, when its empty its empty.
