When I worked at south water market in chicago many years ago, we had lumper wars. truck hit the dock area and people jump up on running boards, saying " I'll unload it for 50.00 " and a bidding war would start. Mostly homeless guys and gals trying to make enough for a meal or bottle. most companies allowd the lumpers on the dock, but never in the buildings. I seen full trucks unloaded, broke down in 60 mins for 25.00. i think it should be like that for lumpers, bid it out, and let the drivers decide,

I've not read the whole thread but I was gob smacked to hear Wal Mart were charging a fee to have goods they ordered unloaded !!

Although I'd be happier if it was an optional not compulsory payment (if I now understand things) Im quite happy to give to charity and good causes but I dont need blackmailing to give.

So glad they no longer allow us inside their warehouses. They need the product therefore they unload it and as they allocate so few docks to unloading and have so many trucks coming in to deliver they have to get a move on.

Yea, letting them bid it out like that may get us unloaded and out quicker too. That would be nice.

    sfs001 Thanks this.

One man posted about the Chicago water market.

    Oh the horrors..

One company I had a 3am lot del. no charge for unlding...

Then another you have to bump their dock drop your trl. and back to the trl. before somebody stole your product.
Backing into those docks were a nightmare even with a cabover and a 40' trl.

Just listen to the two old cops and watch them guide you in.Never hit with their help..
Do not miss those days or running a reefer trl. any one bit

I'm not sure if this has been addressed in the forum, but here's my two cents worth.

One common misconception is that once the freight is loaded on a trailer, the customer owns it. Sorry folks, that ain't the case.

Think about it. Until the driver signs the bill of lading (BOL) at the shipper, the shipper owns the freight/product. Once the driver signs the bill, the shipper no longer owns nor are they responsible for the freight. At that point (when driver signs BOL) the carrier owns or more correctly, is responsible for the freight...not the consignee!

Strictly speaking, thats correct. Makes sense too because:

    1) We really aren't supposed to allow the customer to have the product until they sign the bills....

    2) When lumpers are involved, the bills are never signed until the product is on the dock and counted and broken down and whatever other BS they want done with it. Hm hm.....

My favorites are when you arent allowed to sign SLC because you could see the inside of the trailer after it was loaded. Uh, yeah, I sure didn't count it?

And when they sign "Subject to count", generally on dropped trailers. Well, duh! CYA though i guess

That place was a great place to work, I saw so much crap, always entertainment going on, from the cops yelling at drivers to move, to drivers yelling at cops, and people trying to sell you anything for a buck,
I did feel sorry for the drivers who had no cule on the place before they got there, I seen a fair share of them, just hide out the the truck until they were MT, threw out the lumper money, and then ran in to get bills and ran back to truck, and out as fast as they can

I put lumper's for the most part ,as the guy down the block who gets a nut check ,and $600 in food stamps and buys drugs, with our money.

I mean it all the same...............
Lumpers most of the time receive goverment asst, food stamps and then after you pay those low lifes out of your check.
Then after they unload you ,what happens you pay out the ###:biggrin_25516:

I am sick of working my balls off and some lumper is driveing a caddy it's not right period.

And these lumper service's phhhhhhhhhhhh the same ,we need to org a trucker service.

Call these warehouse's most say its free enterprise, right????
Maybe some of the bigger might not but i know some say this.

Pick up a friend and have him to do the load as what the company pays or even better dip your finger in the sugar bowl and work out a deal with a buddy.

Some of this may not make much sense but when i get pissed,i ramble or tear something up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Notice i said i used to be a receiver at a warehouse(grocery) i had a choice to quit or be fired!!!!!!!!!!!!(i hit a lumper and in turn caused the company no choice)
Yeah i didnt get unemployment ,but by resigning i have and still get along with my past employers.
So i get a good ref
Its a long story but any ways i hate most lumpers!

A few weeks of no deliveries and they will employ them - those that don't - will be out of business!

    Cause it will never happen.
Truckdriveing companys will ##### out their drivers without raiseing a eyebrow!
Besides in their eyes its not theirs until they sign for it.

Also i dont know much about the companys (example Kraft) they will put 6 layers of 1 type salad dressing on 1 layer of another type???????
Why noy put the the 1 type which is 1 layer on top of the 6 layers!???

It a game that will never be won:biggrin_25516:
