Australia A night remembering the past

All too real the memories you can't forget and you will carry to your grave of battles fought, the wounds you carry, the sights which you never wished you have seen. Of men dieing in what they believed in or did'nt. A time in the history of our two great countries that live in infamy - whether it was right or wrong our brave young soldiers faced an adversary that knew no articles of war. I was one of those that faced this enemy, now friend and I'm still carrying the wounds - a bullet cut a groove in my skull, a bayonet in the back, my left hand sliced open by the same bayonet - those healed but the memories remained as fresh as if it just happened. I lay no blame either way - our believes were different, our ideals. A different war that only one side knew how to fight.
Till the day I die I see the faces of those I killed in the name of duty, being trained to have one objective - the misfortune of training in Martial Arts before I had even heard of Vietnam, the Army selecting me for the SAS {Special Forces} and doing without thought of consequence, what I was ordered to do.
God help me forget what I can't. It's one of those nights when it all comes back.

He blesses the boys, as they stand in line
The smell of gun grease and their bayonets they shine
He's there to help them all that he can
To make them feel wanted he's a good holy man
Sky Pilot
Sky Pilot
How high can you fly?
You'll never, never, never, reach the sky

He smiles at the young soldiers, tells them it's all right
He knows of their fear in the forthcoming fight
Soon there'll be blood and many will die
Mothers and fathers back home they will cry

Sky Pilot
Sky Pilot
How high can you fly?
You'll never, never, never, reach the sky

He mumbles a prayer and it ends with a smile
The order is given, they move down the line
But he'll stay behind, and he'll meditate
But it won't stop the bleeding, or ease the hate

As the young men move out into the battle zone
He feels good, with God you're never alone
He feels so tired as he lays on his bed
Hopes the men will find courage in the words that he said

Sky Pilot
Sky Pilot
How high can you fly?
You'll never, never, never, reach the sky

In the morning they return with tears in their eyes
The stench of death lifts up to the skies
A young soldier so ill, looks at the Sky Pilot
Remembers the words 'Thou shalt not kill'.

Sky Pilot
Sky Pilot
How high can you fly?
You'll never, never, never, reach the sky

The Animals

To all those who have suffered and died in Wars, past, present and future.

Let's All Live in Peace

Bless you, although I haven't served because I am almost deaf and have been since birth all the generations of my family have served in every war, conflict or as the government calls it police action. My Uncle Tom did 3 tours in Nam and every one there after. My baby brother was one of the first in Desert Storm. There's no words to remove the pain and the memories that haunt them and you. Only God can help.

I am so sorry, Aussie. As much as we wish it were true, time does not heal all wounds. Some scars remain as our constant reminders of where we have been in life. I wish it weren't so. God bless you... *hugs*

I have seen the flashbacks my uncle went thru when he first came home nam, nothing can take that pain away, or the effect it has on those close to them. The hidden casualties of conflict.

My brother-in-law to this day will not talk about Nam.

YOU ask him a question about it and he simply will not get involved in a discussion about it.

YOU can see there is something in his eyes but it's buried forever in his soul.

To Aussie, and all the others out there who have faced the enemy, Thank You. In no way can I imagine what you have faced. "Saving Private Ryan" and "Band of Brothers" were good but still Hollywood versions. I was in the service for a few years but never came close to facing anything. As I get older, my respect for the combat vet just grows. To all those with the CIBs, purple hearts and other medals - a hearty AIRBORNE ! Thank You so much...

The poem wasa song put out in the Vietnam War era by an English group called "Eric Burdon and The Animals". I can only ever remember the last verse as it says everything. God Bless you Kimberly and all those who have read this nostalgia.
