I'm so sorry to hear about this. It will be hard to tell your son, but keep it factual and let him know that it is okay to be sad. Be aware of the schoolyard rumors that he will be exposed to, and let him know that he can talk to you at any time about his friend. Kids can tell each other some wild tales.

I am sorry for the loss and most of all sorry that your son has to go through this # such a young age

I am sure he will do fine, seems like you are into your son so he will do good, he might have some reactions that cause him to be really bad, however keep in mind 1) he is acting out his feelings 2)don't let him take advantage of you even though you know why he is acting this way :

Do however try and talk about "any" bad behaviour and let him know that you UNDERSTAND and feel bad for his friend also
Good luck and our/my prayers are with you
