Little boy killed in a house fire.

I normally don't do this kind of thing, but just a few minutes ago my wife called me to tell me some bad news. My son, who is 5 had a friend down the street from us that was 6 years old. This morning there was a house fire and he didn't make it out. It's very sad. Not sure how to tell our son.

OUCH!!! Tell your son the truth and emphasize how important it is to have good working smoke detectors and go over again the plan you have to evacuate the house if there IS ever a fire in yours. Also emphasize that he needs to get out and FORGET THE DOGS!!!!

I know our pets are important to us but I can see a young child fighting with a petrified dog or cat trying to get it out and getting caught

Kids are very tough and he'll handle it okay. He'll be sad and you'll take him to the funeral (I assume?) and he'll grow up a little more than he should have to so young but he'll be okay. Just be glad it's not one of you - that would be a LOT harder.

I'm sorry his friend perished. How sad

Firstcav that is so SAD and Tragic!

Something like this is never easy to tell a child.

I remember when I was 9 my friend went thru the ICE on their pond in the winter and drowned. It really affected me for a long time.

God Bless all who were affected by this death.

Even as a mother of 2, I'm at a loss. I wouldn't have as tough of a time with my older boy who understands death, but a 5yr old...tough. I'm sorry Cav, I hope everything works out. Just be there for the little guy. Auntie Rat will be praying for him.

Thanks for the kind words. My wife is very upset about it. She knew him better than I did. Whenever I hear about something like this, even when it happens to someone I don't know it always shakes me up a little. As a parent, I can't imagine how someone would deal with such a lost.

My wife and kids are living town overnight. When they get back we'll decide how to explain this to Max. I'm not sure he will understand it completely.

I appreciate everyone's suggestions.

Heart Broken

Cav, I'm so sorry this happened to your son's young friend. It is, indeed, a parent's worst nightmare...

As difficult as it may be to do, I would suggest you present it to him factually. Tell him in very simple terms what happened. Ask him if he has any questions, and let him lead you into his feelings about his friend's death. If he has no questions now, don't push... but just make yourself available to him whenever he wants to talk about it.

Kids are resilient... and the more normal you keep his days, the better I think he will be. And as for the funeral? I'm not sure. Personally, I would not take him. I would allow him to remember his friend as he last saw him. He's just too young to be able to understand all that is happening around him.

This is just so tragic... and my heart hurts for all lives touched by this little guy...

That's just sad, I hate to hear anyone has been caught up in a fire. I just feel that's the worst way to go. Your son will be ok, you will be suprised how some kids handle it. Be there for him and be understanding that he may act up and he may do things he usually doesn't do so just hug him and tell him everything will be ok (and let him cry even though he is a boy .

Was it on the news? I didn't get to listen "closely" to the news today.. I know there was several fires I heard of.

No, I haven't seen it on the news yet either. I drove by the house last night, and the police and fire marshal were still there at 6PM. The house is completely gutted. We live in Carthage with a population of ~300 people, something like this just devastates the community.
