As a truck driver for more than 30 years, Jimmy Pickett felt at home behind the wheel of his rig. The 64-year-old Max Meadows native, even in retirement, held on to those memories.

“We were sitting there talking one day,” recalled E.R. Shaffer, who employed Pickett for more than 12 years, “and Jimmy said if I die before you do will you take me to the cemetery in a cattle truck. He said he’d take me if I died first. He said he didn’t want to go in a hearse.”
Shaffer immediately remembered his friend’s request when Pickett died Saturday, April 5. A cattle hauler himself, Shaffer was going to be on a trip the day of Pickett’s funeral.

He loaned his 1998 Kenworth rig to his nephew, Todd Pruitt, who cleaned up the trailer and agreed to drive the casket to West End Cemetery.
“Jimmy was a very good friend of mine,” Shaffer said last week. “This was his last request. I had to honor it.”
