Quote WEST LINN, Ore. -- A woman trying to escape her estranged husband was killed outside the West Linn Police Department, officials said Tuesday.
A domestic fight between Lisa McMurtrey and Newton McMurtrey ended in gunfire within 10 paces of the police station's front doors.
Police said Lisa McMurtrey drove to the police station in search of help while her husband gave chase Tuesday afternoon. As the estranged couple reached the police station entrance in their respective cars, Newton McMurtrey slammed his pickup truck into his wife’s SUV, police said.
Officers said he pulled out his rifle and shot his wife through the window. Still sitting in his truck, McMurtrey then turned the gun on himself, according to officers.
Lisa McMurtrey died at the scene.
Paramedics took her husband to [LINK POSTED BY MEMBER] Only Members Can View This Truck Forum Link. Health & Science University, but he died soon after being transported.
West Linn Police Chief Terry Timeus witnessed the shooting.
“I heard some arguing, which sounded pretty serious,” Timeus said. “And I look out my window and I can see a male subject in a pickup and I’m trying to figure out what’s going on … About that time, I see a rifle.”
Several officers were heading to the scene when they heard the shots.
Sgt. Neil Hennellly said it’s fortunate no one else was hurt in the shooting.
“The guy shooting at this woman was shooting toward our building,” Hennelly said. “So had they come out a few seconds sooner, they might have been shot.”
